Chapter 1 - The Birthday Cake That Almost Killed a Prince|

The moment my three-year-old daughter shattered Ethan Moretti’s birthday cake, I knew our lives would never be the same.

What I didn’t know was that Lily had just prevented a murder.

The ballroom of Dominic Moretti’s Westchester mansion fell completely silent.

One hundred guests stared at the broken porcelain scattered across the marble floor. A string quartet stopped playing. Even the security guards seemed frozen.

At the center of everything stood my little girl.

Lily Ellis.

Three years old.

Golden curls, enormous blue eyes, and white sneakers that had somehow carried her through a crowd of New York’s wealthiest people.

Across from her, eight-year-old Ethan Moretti stared at the birthday cake scattered around his polished shoes.

And behind him stood his father.

Dominic Moretti.

Thirty-seven years old. Six feet three inches tall. Dark hair, sharp cheekbones, steel-gray eyes, and a reputation that made powerful men forget how to breathe.

People called him the King of New York.

I called him my employer.

For six years, I had worked as head housekeeper in his mansion. I knew his schedules, his preferences, and exactly how quietly a woman like me needed to move through his world.

But nothing had prepared me for that moment.

“Lily!”

I rushed forward, falling to my knees beside my daughter.

“What have you done, sweetheart?”

Lily didn't answer.

Her tiny fingers clutched my sleeve while she watched Ethan with a strange, desperate expression.

Then Dominic rose from his chair.

The sound of his expensive leather shoes against the marble seemed louder than the shattered plate.

“Who is responsible for this child?”

His voice was deep, controlled, and terrifyingly calm.

“I am, sir.”

I pulled Lily closer.

“Her name is Lily. She's my daughter. Please forgive her. She's only three.”

Dominic looked at me.

Then at his son.

Then at the cake.

“Did she hurt you, Ethan?”

“No, Dad.”

Ethan swallowed.

“She just knocked my plate away.”

Dominic slowly lowered himself onto one knee.

I had seen politicians beg him for favors.

I had watched businessmen tremble in his office.

But I had never seen Dominic Moretti kneel before anyone.

“Lily.”

His voice softened.

“Look at me, sweetheart.”

My daughter lifted her chin.

“Why did you knock Ethan's cake away?”

She stared at him for several seconds.

Then whispered four words.

“Because he'd get sick.”

A cold sensation traveled through my body.

Dominic's expression didn't change.

But his eyes sharpened.

“What makes you think that?”

Lily pointed toward the service corridor.

“A man touched his cake.”

Every guard in the ballroom turned toward the kitchen.

Dominic remained perfectly still.

“What man, Lily?”

She held up her tiny fingers.

“He had a silver box. He put something white on the cake.”

My heart began pounding.

Dominic rose.

“Gabriel.”

His head of security stepped forward.

“Yes, boss?”

“Close every exit.”

Gabriel touched his earpiece.

“Immediately.”

Dominic turned toward the kitchen.

“Find Dr. Harris.”

Then he looked down at the ruined cake.

And for the first time in six years, I saw genuine fear in the eyes of New York's most dangerous man.

Because his son had a severe food allergy.

And someone had just tried to turn a birthday celebration into a funeral.
