Chapter 6 - The Warnings Ethan Sent BackGrace had warned Ethan before.
She reported that Noah flinched whenever Olivia entered with a candle or lighter. She also found burned paper inside his school backpack, although he insisted he had not placed it there.
Ethan forwarded her concerns to Olivia.
Olivia explained each one calmly. Noah was grieving. Grace was overly attached. The school counselor misunderstood. Household staff resented new rules.
Ethan accepted those explanations because confronting them would disrupt the marriage he wanted to preserve.
He had also signed foundation reports without reading the attached invoices. Olivia prepared summaries, and he trusted her to manage details while he traveled.
After the arrest, Ethan told Grace that Olivia had deceived everyone.
Grace answered carefully.
“She deceived you. The rest of us were not allowed to speak without going through her.”
The distinction hurt.
