Chapter 1

“I love you.”
The groom smiled as he dipped his bride beside the fountain, one arm around her waist while guests lifted their phones to record the perfect wedding moment.
The bride laughed softly, her veil spilling over the marble edge, her lace gown glowing beneath the chandeliers.
For one second, she looked completely happy.
Then he let go.
Her smile vanished as she fell backward into the fountain with a violent splash.
Water swallowed her dress.
The guests gasped, then some began to laugh.
The groom doubled over, pointing at her like it was the funniest thing he had ever done.
The bride sat up slowly, soaked from veil to shoes, mascara beginning to run beneath her eyes.
Her hands clutched the heavy wet fabric in disbelief.
“Why did you do that?” she whispered.
He wiped tears of laughter from his face.
“Relax. It was a joke.”
But she was not laughing.
Her eyes moved past him, toward the crowd, toward his best man still recording on his phone.
Then she noticed something.
The groom’s laughter stopped when he saw her face change.
She reached into the fountain water and picked up the small black microphone that had fallen from inside his tuxedo jacket.
It was still blinking red.
Her voice shook.
“You were recording me?”
The groom went pale.
Behind him, the best man lowered his phone.
The bride looked at the guests, then back at her husband.
“What were you planning to do with this?”
May you like
The groom said nothing.
Then his best man whispered, “Don’t tell her. Not here.”
