Chapter 8 - Cracks in the High-Society FacadeThe grand barn erupted into chaos as news of the Ashford familyâs bankruptcy and land fraud spread through the crowd!

Vivianâs wealthy Denver 'friends' immediately turned on her, whispering in disgust as the sheriff presented the forged land documents to Henryâs father, Senior Caldwell.
âThey tried to steal our ranch, Henry!â Senior Caldwell declared, his voice booming with fury as he glared at Vivian. âThey used this marriage to cover their corporate debts!â
Vivian wept hysterically, her arrogant facade completely collapsing as she looked at Henry, begging for mercy.
âHenry! Please!â Vivian whimpered, her lace gown catching on the wooden chairs. âI did it to save my family! I love you!â
Henry looked at her with quiet, cold detachment.
âYou didn't love me, Vivian,â Henry replied softly. âYou loved my familyâs name and my land. Sheriff, please escort Miss Ashford and her father off my property.â
Sheriff Thomas stepped forward, grabbing Vivianâs arm and leading her out of the barn through the main entrance, her weeping echoing into the cold night air.
The high-society guests from Denver scrambled for their carriages, fleeing the ranch in embarrassment, while the local people of Sweetwater Bend remained, staring in awe at Henry and Anna.
Henry turned back to Anna, who stood beside him, still holding her brass tray, completely stunned by the whirlwind of events.
Henry gently took the heavy tray from her hands, setting it on the table, and wrapped his warm hands around hers.
âIâm sorry you had to hear her cruel words, Anna,â Henry said softly, his blue eyes filled with genuine tenderness.
Anna looked up into his eyes, her heart swelling with an emotion so profound it brought fresh, sweet tears to her eyes.

âYou didn't have to defend me, Mr. Caldwell,â Anna whispered.
âI did,â Henry smiled gently. âBecause for the first time in my life, I saw true beauty.â
