Chapter 7 - The Secret LedgerThe entire barn went dead silent.

Vivian stood up from the head table, her face turning crimson with rage and humiliation. “Henry Caldwell! Have you lost your mind?! You are leaving your own wedding table for a scullery maid?!”

Henry led Anna out of the kitchen, stepping into the center of the grand hall, holding her hand firmly before the entire town and two hundred high-society guests.

“I am not leaving my wedding table, Vivian,” Henry said, his voice cold, steady, and resolute. “I am ending a mistake before it begins.”

Vivian gasped, stumbling backward against her chair. “What did you say?!”

“I cannot marry a woman who finds joy in humiliating an honest, hardworking soul,” Henry stated flatly. “Our engagement is over.”

Before Vivian could scream, a tall, stern man in a dark wool coat stepped out from the back of the hall—Sheriff Thomas of Sweetwater County, accompanied by a bank auditor from Denver.

The auditor stepped forward, holding a thick leather ledger.

“Miss Vivian Ashford,” the auditor announced loudly, “I am serving you with a court injunction on behalf of the First National Bank of Denver.”

The crowd gasped in shock!

“Your father’s railroad company filed for complete bankruptcy liquidation three days ago,” the auditor revealed. “You and your father forged land deeds on the Caldwell Ranch to secure a two-hundred-thousand-dollar personal loan!”

Vivian’s face drained of every drop of color as she dropped her champagne flute onto the table, the glass shattering into pieces.
