Chapter 7 - The Search for Sunday FlowersEthan’s heart hammered against his ribs. He stepped slowly toward the table, his hands trembling as he picked up the medical records.

[PATIENT: MAYA BENNETT — DIAGNOSIS: ADVANCED DILATED CARDIOMYOPATHY — EJECTION FRACTION: 15%]

Ethan’s eyes scanned the dates. March 2018—two weeks before she had broken his heart at the Blue Lantern Diner!

He opened her leather journal to a page dated the night of their breakup:

“I lied to him tonight. I told him I loved Marcus Vance. I told him he wasn't enough. God forgive me for the pain in his eyes. But if he knew I was dying, he would quit school, sell his tools, and spend his life sitting in a hospital room watching me fade. He has so much greatness inside him. He needs to run... even if he has to hate me to keep running.”

The room went dead quiet.

Ethan fell onto his knees beside the table, the papers falling from his hands, his breath coming in ragged, agonized gasps.

“She... she was dying...?” Ethan choked out, tears finally breaking through eight years of cold armor, streaming down his face. “She lied to save my future...? Where is she, Ruth?! WHERE IS HER GRAVE?!”

Ruth stepped down from her chair, placing her warm hand on Ethan’s shaking shoulder.

“Maya didn't die, Ethan,” Ruth whispered gently.

Ethan froze, looking up into Ruth’s eyes in complete, shock-filled silence.
