Chapter 1 - The Girl with the Trumpet CaseOn the morning Ethan Walker became rich enough to buy every dream Maya Bennett had ever whispered to him, her mother opened a wooden box and quietly destroyed the only lie that had kept him alive.

For eight years, Ethan had hated Maya with the discipline of a man who had mistaken heartbreak for fuel. He hated her in boardrooms, on construction sites, in luxury hotel rooms overlooking cities he never bothered to love. He hated her every time a banker shook his hand, every time a client called him brilliant, every time someone said he was proof that a poor boy from Willow Creek, Ohio, could become anything if the world kicked him hard enough.

Then he came home and learned the truth.

Maya had never left him for a richer man. She had never stopped loving him. She had broken him because she was dying, and she knew he would burn his whole future down—quit university, sell his tools, abandon his dreams—just to sit beside her hospital bed. The cruelest sentence she ever said to him had been the last gift she knew how to give.

Ethan first loved Maya in seventh grade. He was all elbows, nervous silence, and secondhand sneakers with one sole peeling away. Maya was small, bright-eyed, and serious, carrying a battered trumpet case almost as big as her torso. Every afternoon after band practice, Ethan carried it for her without asking.

“You know I can carry my own trumpet,” she told him one October afternoon.

Ethan looked straight ahead, his cheeks burning. “I know.”

“Then why do you keep taking it?”

“Because the bus gets crowded.”

Maya studied him, then smiled like she had discovered something about him he had not yet discovered about himself. “All right, Ethan Walker. You can carry it today, but don’t get proud.”

He got proud anyway.
