THE HEALER'S HANDS / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - The Ghost's GiftHope is the most intoxicating drug in the world, and Sebastian was completely addicted. After that single step, everything changed. He was no longer a shadow; he was a man in motion.

His obsession became an obsession for the entire Lombardi syndicate. His massive wealth, which previously bought silence and comfort, now bought results. Gabriel was dispatched not to threaten, but to acquire.

A specialized team of engineers was flown in, blindfolded, to the Winnetka estate. They didn't see a patient; they saw a bio-mechanical problem. Their task: design a state-of-the-art walking frame that was more than just parallel bars. They created a custom exoskeleton—sleek carbon fiber and hydraulic pumps—designed not to lift him, but to assist his weak muscles.

The treatment sessions in the library became a sophisticated laboratory. Clare, the mechanic, as depicted in image_0.png, was now working alongside engineers. Her hands (those same "hands of life" depicted in image_0.png) were the arbiters of correct alignment. She was the one who could feel if the technology was forcing a movement that the nerve wasn't ready for.

Her blue dress in image_0.png was replaced by scrubs; her sweat was now a badge of authority. The engineers listened to her. Sebastian listened to her.

Oliver, meanwhile, flourished. His room was a high-tech clean-air bubble. He had tutors. He had everything he could dream of, including a growing connection to the stern, silent man in the chair.

Sebastian began to visit Oliver. Not as a boss, but as a student.

"He taught me about fascia," Sebastian said one afternoon, holding up a complicated biology textbook. Oliver had a gift for science.

"I just know it's stretchy," Oliver shrugged.

Sebastian chuckled, a sound that Clare had never expected to hear from him. "He’s intelligent, Clare. A mind like his deserves a future."

That evening, Sebastian gave Clare a gift. He had not taken an amber drink for four days. His white shirt from image_0.png was unbuttoned at the neck.

"What is this?" Clare asked, staring at the legal document he handed her.

"It’s a trust fund for Oliver," Sebastian said. "He’s accepted to the elite academy in Chicago. The tuition, the medical care—it’s fully funded. For his life."

"Why are you doing this?"

"Because," Sebastian said, "when I couldn't move my legs, I thought I had lost my place in the world. I thought I was just a ghost, fading away. You didn't just 'heal' me, Clare. You recognized that I was still a man worth fixing. This is the only currency a ghost can give."

He looked at his own hands, sculpted as powerful forearms in image_0.png.

"You reminded me that to rule... I must first be human. Oliver is the most human thing in this prison."

It was a profound moment of connection. But it was interrupted by Gabriel’s radio.

"Dominic Rossi is at the gate. And he’s not alone. He has police presence. Someone ratted."

Sebastian’s warm look vanished. The white shirt from image_0.png was re-buttoned, the mask of the ruthless leader sliding back into place. "Take Oliver. Put him in the panic room. Lock it."

"What’s happening?"

"A ghost is about to receive his gift in full," Sebastian said, his voice deadly. "And the whole world is about to see exactly what I am willing to stand for."
