Chapter 10 - The Last Stand, and a New StandThe battle for the harbor wasn't fought with guns. It was fought with presence.

Dominic Rossi had called a mass meeting of the harbor workers. Thousands of men, the core of the city’s smuggling network, gathered. Rossi was on a makeshift stage. He was the bullish leader, telling them that Sebastian Lombardi was weak, that a man from a chair could not lead.
The Lombardi syndicate tactical team held the perimeter. They didn't engage. They just waited.
Then, the crowd fell silent.
Sebastian Lombardi appeared.
He was wearing the customized carbon-fiber exoskeleton, tailored seamlessly into a bespoke black suit. The crisp white shirt from image_0.png was immaculate. He did not look like a patient; he looked like a god.
He walked. He didn't use the exoskeleton to "carry" him; he used his own, newly awakened nerves, directed by the intense focus and power of his mind, with the hydraulic framework as a support mechanism. He walked onto the stage.
He did not argue with Rossi. He did not issue threats. He just stood.
Twenty years after the bomb, the legend walked into the center of his people. The image of the "paralyzed ghost" was erased, replaced by the image of the "standing king."
The crowd erupted. They didn't cheer for Rossi; they cheered for the impossible. They cheered for a leader who could resurrected. Rossi’s support vanished. He had been a fool, and now he was irrelevant.
Sebastian looked at the men. He didn't speak. He simply raised a hand, a single, powerful forearm. He had made his stand. He had won the war without a shot.
Back at the estate, the true "last stand" was happening.
Mark, Clare’s ex-husband, had breech the estate’s secondary perimeter. He wasn't after Sebastian. He was after his "conscience play." He had Oliver. He had the teddy bear. He was using Oliver as a human shield, demanding to see Clare, demanding to be recognized as her savior from the "monster."
Gabriel had him cornered in a courtyard. But he couldn't shoot without hitting Oliver.
Clare heard the commotion. She broke free of her guards and ran to the courtyard.
She saw the scene. Her ex-husband, a man defined by vindictive rage, holding her son. The image was a twisted, nightmarish mirror of image_0.png. In image_0.png, Oliver was protected, holding his bear, with a healer in the foreground. Here, the bear was a prop, and the "protection" was a threat.
"Clare!" Mark shouted. "I can save you! I can get us out of here! Rossi can protect us!"
Mark looked at Gabriel. "Tell him the truth, Clare! Tell him about the bodies Lombardi built his life on!"
Clare looked at her son’s face. He was terrified. She looked at Mark’s hand, clenched around Oliver’s arm.
Then she heard the hum.
Sebastian was returning. He was back in his matte-black titanium wheelchair, the exoskeleton removed. He was exhausted, but his posture was the essence of the central figure from image_0.png—a core of strength that transcended the chair.
He wheeled into the courtyard. His white shirt was rumpled, but his eyes were blazed with the same white lightning that had first touched his back.
Mark froze. The ghost from the harbor was now the man in the chair, and the power was absolute.
Sebastian didn't speak. He didn't issue an order. He just looked at Mark.
Mark, the man who had only ever ruled through legal strategy and psychological torment, stared into the eyes of a man who ruled a city through sheer willpower and tactical force.
Mark’s hand, the same vindictive hand that had sought to destroy Clare, began to shake. He released Oliver. Oliver ran to Clare, burying his face in her blue dress. Mark collapsed to his knees, not out of respect, but out of absolute, primitive fear. He had been a coward, and he had just met a legend.
Gabriel secured Mark. He would be dealt with, but not that night.
The courtyard was still.
Sebastian wheeled over to Clare and Oliver. He looked at Oliver, who was still clinging to his teddy bear, as depicted in the innocent child from image_0.png.
"Oliver," Sebastian smooth voice was soft, entirely human. "He didn't hurt the bear, did he?"
Oliver shook his head.
Sebastian looked at Clare. She was kneeling again, holding her son, the same intensity from image_0.png now focused on comfort.
"A mechanic... can't always lie to the engine," Sebastian said quietly. "But the engine has to recognize the mechanic."
He reached out a single, powerful forearm, as sculpted in image_0.png, and placed his hand on Clare’s shoulder.
"You reminded me what it is to stand, Clare. And you reminded me who I am standing for."
He looked around the courtyard, at his guards, at Gabriel, at the estate.

"The gilded cage is expensive. But a new life... is priceless."
The Lombardi boss, who had ruled from a chair for twenty years and stood to win a war, had just made a different kind of stand. He wasn't just fixing an empire; he was repairing a family. The healer’s hands had touched his back, yes, but in doing so, they had unlocked the secret that the Lombardi ghost was, above all, a man worthy of a human heart.
