Chapter 19 - THE FINAL DANCE OF CELESTE ARDENOne year later, the Arden Theater reopened.

The old Studio Seven was gone.

In its place stood a new dance studio.

Bright.

Open.

Full of windows.

No hidden rooms.

No locked doors.

No secret passages.

The first performance was announced as:

THE FINAL DANCE OF CELESTE ARDEN

But Celeste refused to perform.

“I am too old.”

Lila shook her head.

“You're afraid.”

Celeste smiled.

“Yes.”

“Then you should perform.”

Celeste looked at her daughter.

“You sound like me.”

“No.”

Lila smiled.

“I sound like me.”

The performance began.

Celeste walked onto the stage.

The audience stood.

For the first time in decades, she performed without fear.

Anya watched from the wings.

Elise sat in the audience.

Marin stood beside her.

Noah waited backstage.

Eva sat beside Celeste's old photograph.

The music began.

Celeste danced the first movement.

Lila joined her.

Then Noah.

Then Marin.

Then Eva.

Five people.

Five memories.

Five lives.

The final movement arrived.

Celeste stopped.

She looked at Lila.

Lila held out her hand.

Together, they finished it.

The audience rose.

But Lila did not look at them.

She looked at her mother.

Celeste was crying.

Not from sadness.

May you like

From relief.

The dance was finally free.
