Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO BOUGHT THE SILENCEAdrian appeared on the upper balcony.

He was not alone.

Several men stood behind him.

Lila recognized some of them.

Theater executives.

Former board members.

People who had attended Celeste's memorial.

People who had praised her legacy.

They had all been part of it.

Adrian looked down.

“For decades, people believed the Bellamy program was dead.”

Anya stood.

“You should be dead.”

Adrian smiled.

“You tried.”

“I should have tried harder.”

Adrian ignored her.

“Celeste destroyed the program.”

“No,” Celeste said.

“You did.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You stole my work.”

“I saved children.”

“You destroyed knowledge.”

“I destroyed your cruelty.”

Adrian's face hardened.

“Knowledge does not care whether you find it cruel.”

Lila stepped forward.

“What do you want from me?”

Adrian looked directly at her.

“Your memories.”

“Why?”

“Because you have the complete sequence.”

Lila frowned.

“I don't.”

“You do.”

“You said my mother taught me.”

“Your mother hid it.”

“From you.”

“Yes.”

Adrian smiled.

“But she could not erase it.”

Lila felt a pressure behind her eyes.

The memories.

The dark room.

The music.

The hands.

Adrian continued.

“You are the only person who carries all three layers.”

“What three layers?”

“Celeste's.”

“Anya's.”

“And your own.”

Lila stared.

“You want to transfer them.”

“I want to preserve them.”

“Inside who?”

Adrian looked toward the people on the stage.

“Anyone.”

Anya laughed.

“Liar.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You always were dramatic.”

“You don't want preservation.”

Anya's voice became sharp.

“You want control.”

Adrian smiled.

“Control is simply preservation with discipline.”

Lila felt sick.

“What happened to Victor?”

Adrian's expression changed.

“Victor was weak.”

“He helped you.”

“He helped himself.”

“Then why did you kill him?”

Adrian said nothing.

Lila understood.

“You did.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Victor became dangerous.”

“Because he wanted to expose you?”

“Because he wanted the final sequence.”

Lila remembered the night Victor had been exposed.

His desperation.

His fear.

His repeated demand:

“Where is the second ending?”

She had thought he wanted the choreography.

Now she understood.

He wanted the memory system.

Adrian had killed him because he had tried to steal it.

“What about the ring?”

Adrian looked at his hand.

The black stone ring.

Victor's ring.

“He stole it from me.”

“And you let him wear it?”

“For a time.”

“Why?”

“Because it was useful.”

Lila stared.

The photograph.

The hidden man.

The ring.

Victor had been Adrian's servant long before anyone knew his name.

Adrian turned toward the stage.

“Now, Lila.”

He gestured.

“Dance.”

“No.”

“You do not understand.”

“I understand enough.”

Adrian's face became cold.

“Then I will make you understand.”

He raised his hand.

Two men grabbed Marin.

Another grabbed Noah.

Elise stepped forward.

“Let them go.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You have no authority here.”

Elise's face hardened.

“I have more authority than you think.”

Adrian smiled.

“Do you?”

He turned toward the audience.

“Tell them, Elise.”

Elise froze.

“Tell them what?”

“Tell Lila what you did to her mother.”

Lila looked at Elise.

“What did you do?”

Elise closed her eyes.

Adrian said:

“Tell her.”

Elise began to cry.

“I opened the door.”

Lila stared.

“What door?”

“The night Celeste disappeared.”

Elise looked at her.

“I opened the door for Adrian.”

Lila felt the world stop.

“You betrayed my mother.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Elise looked at Marin.

“Because he had Marin.”

Lila looked at Marin.

“What?”

Adrian smiled.

“When Marin was seventeen, she tried to expose the program.”

Elise's voice broke.

“I thought he would kill her.”

“So you opened the door.”

“Yes.”

“And my mother?”

“I thought she would escape.”

“But she was attacked.”

“Yes.”

“By Adrian?”

Elise nodded.

Lila stared at her.

“You helped him.”

“I know.”

“And then you let me believe Victor was responsible.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

Lila's eyes filled with tears.

“You let me mourn my mother.”

Elise had no answer.

Lila turned away.

Adrian looked satisfied.

“Now you understand.”

Lila looked at him.

“No.”

Adrian frowned.

“I understand that you are a monster.”

The lights went out.

This time, Lila was ready.

The second finale had begun.
