Chapter 14 - The Wedding Belle Planned Badly
Belle insisted wedding needed three things: pancakes, violin, and dog.
We owned no dog.
She solved by borrowing Marco’s German shepherd.
Wedding took place in garden at estate.
Small.
Eleanor cried before ceremony.
Marco cried and denied.
Detective Warren attended.
Celia sent letter from prison. I did not read until later.
Harlan wore gray.
I wore simple ivory dress.
No empire.
No political guests.
No reporters.
During vows Harlan said, “You met me when everyone around me knew what I owned and you were the only person who cared whether I had a chair.”
I said, “Technically Belle cared.”
Everyone laughed.
Then I told him, “I don’t promise to obey you.”
“Thank God.”
“I promise to argue honestly.”
“Terrifying.”
“And stay by choice.”
His eyes filled.
“That is enough.”
Belle played violin terribly beautifully.
