Chapter 10 - A Home Beyond the Gates

One year later, the scent of sea salt and cedar filled the air.

Our new home was a sunlit, two-story craftsman house nestled on the coastal bluffs of Oregon, overlooking the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean. There were no marble floors, no surveillance cameras, and no towering iron gates—only a wide front porch, blooming flower gardens, and open space.

Noah, now a cheerful toddler with bright blue eyes, was laughing on the grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy that tumbled clumsily across the lawn.

Grace sat on the wooden porch swing, sipping a cup of hot chamomile tea, her eyes glowing with peace and vitality. She wore a simple white linen sundress, the breeze rustling through her hair.

I walked out from the kitchen, holding two freshly baked scones, and sat down beside her on the swing. I wrapped my arm around her shoulders, pulling her close against my side.

"What are you thinking about?" I asked softly, resting my chin against her head.

Grace leaned into my chest, watching Noah giggle as the puppy licked his cheek.

"I was thinking that for a long time, I thought love had to be grand, expensive, and protected behind tall walls," Grace murmured, looking down at the platinum band shining on her finger. "But real love doesn't lock you in a cage to control you. Real love breaks the cage open and gives you the whole sky."

I kissed her softly, the sound of the ocean waves blending with our son’s laughter in the golden afternoon sun. We had left the shadows of the past far behind—and in their place, we had built a true home.
