Chapter 4 - The Russian Threat

Dante’s eyes narrowed into cold, lethal focus. "What does Volkov know?"

"Volkov was holding the title deed on that condemned warehouse block," Vincent explained, swiping through building blueprints on the screen. "He wasn't trying to evict those children; he was planning to demolish the structure tonight to build a bonded distribution hub for illegal arms shipments."

"And if the children had been inside?" Olivia gasped, horror choking her voice.

"They wouldn't have checked the basement, Miss Bennett," Vincent answered grimly.

A terrifying stillness settled over Dante Calvetti. It was the calm before a catastrophic storm—the quiet fury that had made him the undisputed master of the Midwest.

"Volkov has operated in my city on borrowed time," Dante said, his voice dropping to a freezing whisper. "He thinks because his syndicate controls the southern freight yards, he can endanger innocent lives on my borders."

He turned to Vincent.

"Mobilize all four tactical strike units. Coordinate with Chief Deputy Miller at the federal precinct. We are going to seize every bonded warehouse Volkov owns along the river before dawn."

Dante walked over to where Olivia was standing. He reached out, his warm, strong hand gently cupping her cheek, wiping away a stray tear.

"Stay with the children in the east wing, Olivia," Dante whispered with fierce tenderness. "The blast doors will be sealed. By the time the sun rises over the lake, the monster who threatened your family will be erased forever."

Olivia looked into his storm-gray eyes, seeing the man Ruth had believed in all those years ago.

"Come back to us, Dante," Olivia said softly.

"Always," he replied.
