Chapter 7 - The Abandoned Warehouse

Following a frantic tip from a sympathetic harbor dockworker who recognized Grace’s photograph, Ethan and Thorne’s vehicle pulled up beside a decaying, snow-draped industrial warehouse near the old commercial shipping docks. The structure was dark, skeletal, and battered by freezing lake winds. Leaving Thorne to secure the perimeter with backup operatives, Ethan grabbed a heavy-duty tactical flashlight and pushed open a rusted side door, stepping into the cavernous, echoing interior. “Grace!” Ethan called out, his voice bouncing off concrete pillars and stacked wooden crates. “Grace, it’s Ethan! Can you hear me?” There was no immediate answer, save for the dripping of melting snow through a fractured skylight. As Ethan swept his flashlight beam across the floor, he noticed a small, makeshift camp set up in the corner behind a wall of old pallets—a tattered sleeping bag, a half-empty bottle of water, and a small notebook lying open on an upturned crate. Ethan rushed over, falling to his knees. He picked up the notebook. The pages were filled with delicate, familiar handwriting—sketches of dresses, grocery lists, and heartbreaking journal entries detailing Grace’s daily terror of being found, combined with endless prayers for her daughter’s safety. “If anything happens to me, please let Ethan know she is his,” one page read, dated just two weeks ago. “I ran because I was afraid my world would swallow him whole. But now the wolves are at the door.” Ethan clutched the notebook to his chest, a strangled sob breaking from his throat. He was so close. She had been here, freezing and terrified, just days prior. Suddenly, a sharp crunch of gravel echoed from the loading bay entrance outside, followed by Thorne’s urgent voice crackling over the tactical radio: “Mr. Caldwell! We’ve got incoming! Armed individuals approaching the perimeter—they're looking for her too!”
