Chapter 3 - Ghosts in the System

By dawn, Ethan had mobilized the most formidable private investigative resources in Illinois, bypassing local police red tape to launch a comprehensive, high-priority search for Grace Bennett. Seated behind his mahogany desk in his corporate study, Ethan stared at a blank digital dossier on his monitor while waiting for updates from Marcus Thorne, his top-tier security consultant. Thorne arrived precisely at 8:00 AM, sliding a thick manila folder across the desk. “It’s not going to be simple, Mr. Caldwell,” Thorne warned gravely. “Miss Bennett dropped off the grid shortly after moving to Chicago five years ago. She lived under various cash-lease sublets, worked low-wage retail jobs, and maintained zero digital footprint—no active social media, no credit lines, and no major medical records under her own name until Ava was born at a community clinic downtown.” Ethan flipped open the folder, his eyes scanning the sparse documentation. A photograph of Grace from a clinic intake form confirmed it was indeed the woman he loved, looking thinner and more tired than he remembered, but carrying the same unyielding grace. “How did she survive with a child?” Ethan demanded, his voice tight with controlled anguish. “Odd jobs, cash-in-hand tailoring, and assistance from local shelters,” Thorne replied quietly. “However, our financial trace shows a sudden disruption three weeks ago. Her landlord evicted her from a small apartment in the West Loop due to unpaid rent, and she was reportedly hospitalized briefly for acute respiratory exhaustion at St. Jude’s clinic before discharging herself against medical advice.” Ethan’s jaw tightened. Grace had been sick, destitute, and desperate, and she had shielded Ava from her misery right up until the night she left her by the cemetery gates. “Find out where she was taken when she left the clinic,” Ethan ordered, standing up with absolute resolve. “Every hospital, every shelter, every pharmacy within a five-mile radius of Pine Grove Cemetery. I want her found.”
