Chapter 5 - The Boardroom CoupThe following Monday morning, the annual shareholders meeting of Sterling Financial Group was held on the top floor of the Financial District Center.

Ethan arrived forty minutes early, wearing an ill-fitting suit, trying desperately to avoid the dozens of financial reporters waiting outside the building. His hair was messy, his skin pale, and his hands shook as he tried to organize his presentation folders.
He believed he still had a chance. He believed that if he could convince the major institutional investors that he was an innocent victim of Madison’s deception, they would allow him to retain his position as Chief Executive Officer.
At 10:00 a.m., the heavy double mahogany doors of the main boardroom opened.
Twelve of the city’s most influential investors sat around a polished oval table. At the head of the table sat the lead institutional director, Arthur Vance—no relation to Madison, but a formidable billionaire who controlled thirty percent of the firm’s voting shares.
Ethan stepped up to the podium, forcing a strained, pathetic smile.
“Good morning, members of the board,” Ethan began, his voice cracking slightly. “Before we review the fourth-quarter financial returns, I want to personally address the recent personal media circus surrounding my former marriage. As you all know, I was the victim of an extraordinary criminal deception perpetrated by a woman who—”
“Sit down, Ethan,” Arthur Vance interrupted coldly, not even looking up from his tablet.
Ethan blinked, freezing in place. “Arthur... please, if you give me ten minutes to explain—”
“The board does not require an explanation, Mr. Sterling,” Arthur Vance said, raising his hand. “We require a change in leadership.”
The side door of the boardroom opened.
I walked into the room, wearing a tailored navy wool suit, my hair styled in an elegant, commanding bun. Beside me walked Evelyn Reed and Dr. Adrian Vale.
Ethan stared at me in absolute horror, his jaw dropping. “Claire?! What are you doing here?! This is a private executive board meeting!”
“Miss Vance sits here as the majority equity holder of Sterling Financial Group,” Evelyn Reed announced to the room, placing a stack of legal documents on the table. “Following the emergency court ruling on Friday, the court reinstated Miss Vance’s original fifty-one percent controlling stake in the firm, effective immediately.”
The board members stood up one by one, extending their hands to welcome me.
Ethan collapsed against the podium, grabbing his chest as if he couldn't breathe. “Fifty-one percent...? No... no, that’s impossible! You can’t push me out of my own company!”
I walked up to the head of the table, looking down at Ethan with complete, unshakeable composure.
“You didn't build this firm alone, Ethan,” I said, my voice echoing powerfully through the room. “My inheritance funded every contract, every office lease, and every employee salary for the first three years. You spent four years convincing yourself that I was useless while you built an empire on my money.”
I pressed a button on the conference room console.
“Effective immediately,” I announced, “Ethan Sterling is removed as Managing Director for gross ethical misconduct and breach of fiduciary duty. Security will escort him off the premises.”
Two towering private security guards stepped into the boardroom, grabbing Ethan by his arms and forcing him to his feet.

“Claire! Please!” Ethan screamed, tears streaming down his face as he was dragged backward toward the door. “Give me another chance! We can rebuild the firm together! I love you! I always loved you!”
I didn't even look back as security hauled him out into the hallway, his desperate cries fading down the carpeted corridor.
