Chapter 2 - The Altered DiagnosisThe hospital corridor felt completely airless.

Ethan stood frozen in his dark suit, his eyes darting frantically between Dr. Adrian Vale, the sealed envelope, and his trembling wife.
“What are you talking about, Adrian?” Ethan stammered, his voice losing every trace of its previous smug authority. “Madison was my wife’s best friend! She supported us through every single failed IVF cycle!”
“She didn't support you, Ethan,” I said, my voice steady, clear, and perfectly unbothered. “She sabotaged us.”
Dr. Vale pulled out a certified, notarized affidavit bearing the official seal of the State Medical Board.
“Three years ago,” Dr. Vale explained with cold, clinical precision, “a rogue lab technician named Karen Miller was fired from St. Catherine’s for falsifying records. During a federal audit last month, she confessed to receiving twelve separate wire transfers originating from a private account under the name Madison Vance—your current wife’s maiden name.”
Ethan’s face turned a sickening shade of grey. He slowly turned to look down at Madison, who was hovering over the spilled milk, her hands trembling so violently she couldn't pick up the plastic baby bottle.
“Madison...” Ethan whispered, his voice cracking. “Tell me he’s lying. Tell me you didn't do this.”
Madison looked up, tears of panic brimming in her eyes. “Ethan, listen to me! She’s trying to ruin us! Claire paid this doctor to make up stories because she’s jealous of our baby! She’s bitter that you left her!”
“I didn't pay Dr. Vale anything, Madison,” I said softly, taking a step closer to her. “Dr. Vale is the Chief of Reproductive Medicine. He was appointed by the state medical board to audit the records after I discovered that my original hormone panels from 2021 had been deleted from the central database.”
I looked at the pearl earrings dangling from her ears.
“You sat in my living room every week, Madison,” I continued, every word landing like a quiet blow. “You held my hand while I cried over negative pregnancy tests. You brought me herbal teas that tasted strangely bitter. You told me Ethan deserved a real family, and that I should let him go if I truly loved him.”
Madison shrank back against the hospital wall, her lips quivering, unable to form a single sentence.
Ethan stepped closer to Dr. Vale, grabbing the edge of the envelope. “If Claire wasn't infertile... then why couldn't we conceive for four years?! We went to three different specialists!”
Dr. Vale looked at Ethan with a mixture of profound professional pity and absolute disgust.
“Because, Mr. Sterling,” Dr. Vale answered quietly, “you were being given heavy doses of synthetic estrogen blockers disguised as daily vitamin supplements—supplements that Madison personally ordered from an unregulated online compounding pharmacy.”
Ethan stared blankly at the doctor, his mind struggling to process the revelation. “What... what did you say?”
“Your former best friend didn't just target Claire,” Dr. Vale revealed, handing Ethan a secondary toxicology report. “She systematically suppressed your sperm count for three years while pretending to comfort you both. The moment you divorced Claire, Madison stopped putting the chemicals in your drinks. Six months later, she was pregnant.”
Ethan turned his head slowly to look at Madison. The horror in his eyes was absolute.
“You poisoned me?” Ethan gasped, his chest heaving with sudden rage. “You poisoned me for three years?!”
Madison burst into frantic, ugly sobs, reaching up to touch his arm. “Ethan, I did it for us! I loved you! Claire didn't appreciate you! She was always focused on her career and her foundation! I knew we were meant to be together!”
Ethan slapped her hand away with a loud SNAP that echoed down the hallway.
“Don't touch me!” he roared.
The baby on the floor began to cry loudly, terrified by his father’s scream. Passing nurses stopped in their tracks, reaching for the security wall phones.

I stood there, looking at the broken pieces of the life they had built on my suffering.
“I told you, Ethan,” I said quietly, leaning in so only he could hear me. “Leaving me wasn't the best decision you ever made. It was the trap you walked into with your eyes wide open.”
