THE FOUR-YEAR TRAP / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The House Becomes MineA year after the trial, I renovated the house.

Not because I hated it.

Because I wanted it to belong to me again.

I removed the furniture David had chosen.

I repainted the walls.

I turned his office into a bright reading room.

The bedroom became my own space.

No memories belonged there anymore.

Only mine.

Teresa and Harold eventually moved into a smaller home.

Before leaving, Teresa came to see me.

“I owe you an apology.”

I looked at her.

“You do.”

She smiled sadly.

“I spent years believing my son could do no wrong.”

“I know.”

“I thought you were lucky to have him.”

I almost laughed.

“I thought so too.”

She looked around the house.

“You seem happier.”

“I am.”

She nodded.

“I'm glad.”

Before leaving, she hugged me.

It surprised me.

But I hugged her back.

Not because everything was forgiven.

Because sometimes closure doesn't come from forgetting.

It comes from letting people go.

Harold later sent me a letter.

He thanked me for caring for them even after everything David had done.

I kept the letter.

Not because I needed their approval.

Because it reminded me that people could change.

That year, I also started my own consulting firm.

I helped women understand their finances before marriage.

I taught them how to protect their assets.

How to recognize financial manipulation.

How to read contracts.

How to ask questions.

The business grew quickly.

Women began sending me messages.

“I thought I was alone.”

“You helped me understand my finances.”

“I finally left.”

Those messages meant more than money ever could.

Then one afternoon, Sophia visited.

She had started her own company too.

She smiled.

“You know what's funny?”

“What?”

“We both built businesses after David tried to control our lives.”

I laughed.

“Maybe he underestimated us.”

She nodded.

“He definitely did.”

We stood beside the window.

The same window where I had once waited for David to come home.

Now I watched sunlight fill the room.

No fear.

No secrets.

No waiting.

I realized something.

David had thought he was leaving me behind.

May you like

He hadn't.

He had accidentally set me free.
