Chapter 5 - The Woman Behind the AffairSophia contacted me three days later.

She wanted to meet.
We sat in my attorney's office.
She brought a laptop.
“I need to show you something.”
She opened a video.
David appeared on screen.
He was talking to a man I didn't recognize.
“The transfer happens after Eleanor signs.”
The man asked:
“And if she refuses?”
David smiled.
“She won't.”
“Why?”
“Because she thinks she's my wife.”
I felt my stomach twist.
The video continued.
“She'll spend four years looking after my parents. By the time I come back, she'll have nothing.”
Sophia paused the video.
“I recorded it six months ago.”
“Why?”
“Because I realized he was using me too.”
She opened another file.
David had promised Sophia a penthouse.
A company.
A marriage.
But every promise depended on me signing documents.
I stared at the screen.
“He needed my signature.”
“Yes.”
“And if I refused?”
“He planned to make you look mentally unstable.”
I closed my eyes.
Everything suddenly made sense.
The four-year separation.
His parents moving in.
The financial accounts.
The forged signature.
The Tokyo transfer.
It was all one plan.
He wanted me isolated.
He wanted control of the house.
He wanted access to my inheritance.
And he wanted me blamed for his financial crimes.
Sophia whispered:
“I was supposed to convince you to sign.”
I looked at her.
“You almost did.”
“I know.”
She began crying.
“I was selfish.”
“Yes.”
“I don't expect forgiveness.”
I nodded.
“That makes two of us.”
But I took the laptop.
Because the evidence mattered more than forgiveness.
That evening, investigators discovered another connection.
David had been transferring company funds to an overseas investment group.
The group was controlled by his business partner.
His business partner was also Sophia's father.
The affair suddenly looked different.
It wasn't just betrayal.
It was a financial conspiracy.
Sophia's father had been involved.
But Sophia had eventually discovered the truth.
And David had no idea she had been recording him.
That night, my attorney called.
“Eleanor, David's plane ticket was canceled.”
“Where is he?”
“We believe he's already back in New York.”
I looked toward the window.
“Why?”
“He knows we're getting close.”
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
David's voice came through.
“You should have stayed quiet.”
I said nothing.
“You have no idea what you're doing.”
“I know exactly what I'm doing.”
“You're destroying your own marriage.”
“No.”
I smiled.
“You destroyed it years ago.”
He lowered his voice.
“You'll regret this.”
“Maybe.”
Then I added:
“But you'll regret it more.”
I hung up.
Ten minutes later, federal agents arrived at my door.
May you like
They had a warrant.
David's house was about to become a crime scene.
