The Fire in the Inheritance / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Silence of the SeaThe sea breeze carried the scent of salt, expensive champagne, and impending disaster. Under a canopy of warm fairy lights and white floral arrangements, our family’s coastal estate looked like a paradise. On the pool deck, a large banner read: EIGHTEEN AT LAST. Nearly two hundred guests stood around the sparkling water, holding crystal glasses, whispering and laughing.

But the laughter wasn't for the birthday. It was for me.

I stood by the edge of the pool, clutching a dark robe around myself. Beneath it, I was wearing a simple yellow bikini—the exact one my twin sister, Lila, had forced me to wear.

"Go on, Nora," Lila mocked, her voice amplified by the microphone she held. She wore a bright red swimsuit with a satin sash that proudly declared Birthday Girl. "Don't be shy. Show them the monster you've been hiding under that robe all these years."

Beside her, our mother, Katherine, stood stiffly, looking away. Our father, Charles, was deep in conversation with a group of investors, completely ignoring the public humiliation of his second daughter. For ten years, I had been the family secret. While Lila was the face of our mother's luxury skincare empire, I was kept in the shadows—my long sleeves and high collars hiding what they called "unfortunate flaws."

Lila smirked, raising her phone. Behind her, dozens of classmates and social media influencers did the same, their lenses reflecting the warm party lights, waiting to capture my shame.

“They want a show? I'll give them a reckoning,” I thought.

With a calm, steady hand, I untied the robe and let it slide to the stone floor.

A collective, suffocating gasp echoed across the pool deck. The laughter died instantly. The pale, raised, and twisted burn scars that covered my back, shoulder, and side were fully exposed under the bright party lights.

I didn't cower. I stepped forward, reached out, and took the microphone directly from Lila’s trembling hand.

I looked her dead in the eyes and spoke clearly into the mic: “These scars are the only reason my sister is still alive.”
