Chapter 12 - Vivian’s Testimony

Vivian’s transformation became public when she testified before state legislative committee about financial coercion in wealthy marriages.
I watched livestream at work.
She said, “I had access to chauffeurs, jewelry, and private jets, but not independent financial decision-making. Privilege delayed my understanding because control looked luxurious.”
She also admitted helping hide funds.
No self-exoneration.
“I made illegal and unethical choices because fear became justification. Fear explains conduct. It does not erase responsibility.”
That line stayed with me.
After testimony she called.
“Too much?”
“No.”
“Did I embarrass Oliver?”
“He’s four.”
“Eventually?”
“Truth told responsibly doesn’t embarrass him.”
She exhaled.
“Claire?”
“Yes?”
“Thank you for not teaching him hate us.”
“I’m teaching boundaries.”
“I know.”
“You’re not entitled to closeness because changed.”
“I know.”
“But you’ve earned more than before.”
May you like
She cried.
I almost did.
