Chapter 7 - The Country Club Reckoning

While we were settling into the breezy, sunlit rooms of the Granville farmhouse, Margaret was facing a social catastrophe of her own making.
In Upper Arlington high society, appearance was currency. Margaret had spent decades cultivating a reputation as the benevolent matriarch of Columbus philanthropy. But the scene at St. Andrew's Church had been witnessed by the wives of bank presidents, city council members, and prominent hospital board trustees.
On Wednesday afternoon, Margaret walked into the dining terrace of the Scioto Country Club for her weekly bridge luncheon. Dressed in a brand-new pastel blazer and designer sunglasses, she expected the usual warm greetings and reserved corner table.
Instead, when she walked onto the terrace, the polite chatter died down.
Mrs. Kensington, the president of the Children’s Hospital Charity Board, looked up from her tea, met Margaret’s eyes with cold disapproval, and immediately turned her chair away.
When Margaret approached her usual table, her longtime friend Evelyn cleared her throat awkwardly. "Margaret, dear... we actually filled the table today. Perhaps you’d prefer the indoor lounge?"
"What is going on here?" Margaret demanded, her voice tight with embarrassment. "Are you all ignoring me over a minor family squabble?"
"Throwing personalized keepsakes across a church floor and threatening to make your infant grandchild homeless isn't a squabble, Margaret," Mrs. Kensington said flatly, not bothering to look up from her menu. "It’s disgraceful. Several of us have submitted a request to the executive committee to review your chair position on the Gala Board."
Margaret stood paralyzed on the patio, the whispers of her social circle closing in around her like a cage.

For thirty years, she had believed her money and lineage made her untouchable. But in one single morning of unchecked arrogance, she had stripped away her own veneer, exposing the petty, vindictive tyrant beneath.
Humiliated and isolated, Margaret hurried through the club lobby to her luxury sedan, realizing for the first time that the walls of her perfect world were crumbling from the inside out.
