Chapter 3 - The Favor Table Collapse

Margaret’s face turned bright crimson with rage. The porcelain mask of high-society elegance she had worn for forty years shattered into ugly, raw fury.

"If you proceed with that name," Margaret hissed, stepping directly into my space, "you can pack your things and find a new home by the end of the month. You think you two can disrespect me in front of my peers and still benefit from my generosity?!"

The entire church gasped.

For two years, Daniel and I had been renting the historic carriage house on my parents’ four-acre estate in Upper Arlington while saving for our own down payment. Margaret had offered it as a 'loving family arrangement' so we could be close while the baby was small. We had paid rent every month on time, maintained the grounds, and poured thousands of dollars into renovations. But in Margaret's mind, a lease was simply a leash to keep us under her control.

"You're threatening to evict your own daughter and six-month-old grandchild over a baby name?" Daniel asked, his voice shaking with pure disgust.

"I am demanding respect from people who live on my land!" Margaret shouted, forgetting completely where she was.

Father Michael closed his prayer book with a loud, authoritative snap. "Margaret Harrington, you will lower your voice immediately or I will have the parish ushers escort you off the altar."

Margaret looked around the sanctuary. The guests weren't admiring her anymore. Her wealthy friends from the country club were looking down at their laps in secondhand embarrassment. Her cousins were shaking their heads in disgust.

Seeing that she had lost the room, Margaret grabbed the stack of embroidered blankets from the display table, her hands shaking violently.

"Fine!" she cried out. "Have it your way! Let's see how well your little family survives without the Harrington name backing you!"

She spun around on her designer heels, her heavy blue tweed skirt sweeping against the favor table near the archway. The corner of her coat caught the linen tablecloth, yanking it forward with violent momentum.

Dozens of glass candles, ceramic keepsakes, and personalized frames crashed onto the stone floor, shattering into hundreds of pieces that skittered across the aisle.

Without looking back, Margaret marched through the heavy oak double doors of the church and slammed them shut behind her.
