Chapter 18 - The Confession That Changed Everything|

Marcus Bell looked nothing like the confident man who had threatened me outside Tyler's hospital.

He sat inside an interview room wearing an ordinary gray sweatshirt.

His face was pale.

His hands wouldn't stop shaking.

Dominic and I weren't permitted to question him.

But Detective Vega later showed us selected portions of his recorded statement.

Marcus admitted he had helped arrange Evelyn's disappearance.

He also admitted that he had worked with Dr. Kessler to control Noah's behavior and damage the boy's credibility.

Dominic watched the recording without moving.

On the screen, Marcus rubbed his face.

“Evelyn found out about the foundation.”

Detective Vega's voice came from off camera.

“What foundation?”

“Three Bells.”

“What was happening there?”

Marcus swallowed.

“We were moving money through fraudulent contracts. Some of the shipping businesses were involved.”

“Who was responsible?”

“I handled the records.”

“And Dominic Vale?”

Marcus hesitated.

“Dominic knew we had questionable contracts. He didn't know the whole scheme.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

I watched his face.

He had built a powerful empire and allowed dangerous people to operate beneath him.

Now those choices had reached into his son's bedroom.

On the recording, Vega continued.

“Why target Noah?”

Marcus looked down.

“Because Evelyn left evidence with him.”

“What evidence?”

“We believed she'd hidden copies of the records in something he carried.”

The bronze horse.

My heart began pounding.

Marcus continued:

“We searched his room. We searched the toys. Nothing.”

“So you kept frightening him?”

Marcus began crying.

“Kessler said the boy was remembering too much.”

Detective Vega's voice hardened.

“And you believed terrorizing a child was the answer?”

Marcus covered his face.

“Evelyn was never supposed to get hurt.”

Dominic stood suddenly.

I reached for his arm.

“Dominic.”

He didn't look at me.

On the screen, Vega asked:

“Who ordered the attack on Evelyn?”

Marcus stared at the table.

“I can't tell you.”

“Why not?”

“Because they'll kill me.”

“Who?”

He shook his head.

“The person behind Three Bells.”

Vega leaned forward.

“Give us a name.”

Marcus whispered:

“You don't understand.”

His voice trembled.

“Dominic isn't the only powerful man in that family.”

The recording ended.

Dominic stared at the blank screen.

I spoke quietly.

“What did he mean?”

Dominic didn't answer immediately.

Then he looked at me.

“My father founded the original Vale transportation company.”

I nodded.

“He died when I was twenty-seven.”

Dominic's expression was strangely troubled.

“At least, that's what everyone told me.”

My heart began pounding.

“What?”

He looked toward the window.

“My father's body was never released to the family.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

“His attorney said there were legal complications.”

A long silence passed.

Then Dominic said something I would never forget.

“Clara, I spent years believing my family's greatest danger came from our enemies.”

He looked toward Noah's photograph.

“I'm beginning to think our enemies were the only people who ever told us the truth.”
