THE DIAMOND SHIELD / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - The Hospital RoomThe private wing of Northwestern Memorial Hospital was completely cordoned off by Vanguard security personnel. No press, no unauthorized hospital staff, and certainly no members of the Carter family were permitted within fifty feet of Room 802.

I lay in a soft, motorized bed, surrounded by the quiet hum of heart monitors and the clean scent of antiseptic. My back was wrapped in specialized burn-and-trauma bandages, and a continuous IV drip delivered high-grade pain medication into my system.

My father sat in a leather armchair beside my bed, holding a warm cup of tea, his face looking tired but infinitely relieved.

"The doctors say the scars will fade with laser therapy," Arthur said softly, setting his cup down. "Six months, maybe a year. But the physical healing has begun, Clara."

"I don't care about the scars, Dad," I whispered, looking out the floor-to-ceiling window at the glowing Chicago skyline. "They're just reminders that I survived."

A quiet knock sounded at the door. Prosecutor Evelyn Reed stepped inside, carrying a thick leather briefcase. She nodded respectfully to my father before sitting in the chair opposite him.

"How are you feeling, Mrs. Carter?" Evelyn asked gently.

"It's Miss Sterling now," I corrected smoothly. "I've already instructed my legal team to file for an emergency annulment based on fraud and physical violence."

Evelyn smiled thinly, pulling a tablet from her briefcase. "Understood, Miss Sterling. I have an update on the criminal proceedings. Andrew and Vanessa are currently being held without bail at the Metropolitan Correctional Center. Given the flight risk and the sheer volume of financial crimes, the judge denied their petitions for bond."

"What about the evidence from the pendant?" I asked.

Evelyn’s expression turned grim. "The audio and visual recordings from your necklace are crystal clear. The grand jury viewed the footage this morning. It took them less than fifteen minutes to return a forty-count indictment."

She tapped her tablet screen, displaying a series of financial flowcharts. "Furthermore, the forensic audit of Carter Enterprises is complete. Andrew didn't just launder money through Vanessa's consulting firm; he actively embezzled twelve million dollars from his own board members to cover massive gambling debts in Macau."

"Does his family know?" I asked.

Evelyn chuckled—a dry, professional sound. "His mother, Eleanor Carter, has been calling my office every twenty minutes, screaming that you're a vengeful gold-digger who fabricated the entire event to steal her son's company. She claims she's coming to the hospital to 'confront' you."

My father’s hand tightened around his walking stick. "Eleanor Carter is welcome to try," Arthur said, his voice dropping into that terrifying, icy tone. "My security team has standing orders to have her arrested for trespassing the moment she steps onto hospital grounds."

"She won't get far," Evelyn assured us. "The state has frozen all joint assets connected to the Carter family. Eleanor’s credit cards were declined at her country club two hours ago. The bank is repossessing her Bentley as we speak."

I closed my eyes, letting out a long, slow breath. For four years, Eleanor Carter had treated me like dirt under her shoes. She had mocked my clothes, forced me to sit at the foot of the table during family dinners, and constantly reminded me that her son had "married beneath his station."

She was about to learn just how low her station really was.

"What's the next step, Evelyn?" I asked, opening my eyes.

"Tomorrow morning, we go to court for the emergency asset seizure and the corporate dissolution of Carter Enterprises," Evelyn replied. "Since you are the primary creditor through Vanguard's initial investment, you have first right of refusal on all company assets."

I looked over at my father, a slow, cold smile spreading across my lips.

"I don't want to dissolve Carter Enterprises, Evelyn," I said softly.

Arthur looked at me, a sharp eyebrow raised in curiosity. "What do you want to do with it, my star?"

"I want to buy it for one dollar," I replied. "I want to rename it Sterling Global Architecture. And I want Andrew to watch from his prison cell as I rebuild his entire legacy under my name."
