THE DIAMOND SHIELD / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - The UnravelingAndrew stared at the old man, his jaw working silently as his mind tried to process the sheer scale of the force that had just breached his secure home.

"Your... your father?" Andrew stammered, looking from Arthur to the armed tactical operatives lining the perimeter of the room. "You're... you're Arthur Sterling? The Sterling from Vanguard Global?"

"You thought she was weak because she was quiet," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a register so low and dangerous it made the crystal drops on the chandelier hum. "You thought because she lived modestly and loved you that she had no one behind her. You mistook her mercy for powerlessness."

Vanessa, trembling violently beside the sofa, tried to back toward the hallway leading to the rear exit. "Look, sir... I don't have anything to do with this! I was just a guest! Andrew forced me to come here tonight!"

"Liars always bleed first, Miss Vance," Arthur said coldly, without even turning his head toward her.

One of the tactical operatives stepped into the hallway, completely cutting off Vanessa's escape route. He held up a sleek black tablet, displaying a live feed of federal agents raiding a penthouse apartment in downtown Chicago—Vanessa's primary residence.

"Vanessa Vance," the operative announced in a monotone voice. "As of six minutes ago, the IRS Criminal Investigation Division has seized your accounts, your properties, and your luxury vehicles. Federal warrants for grand larceny, wire fraud, and tax evasion have been signed by a federal judge."

Vanessa’s knees buckled. She slid down the side of the sofa, weeping hysterically, her designer makeup smearing across her face. "Andrew! Do something! You said you had everything under control! You said she was just an orphan with a tiny trust fund!"

Andrew didn't answer her. He couldn't. His eyes were wide, bloodshot, locked onto Arthur.

"Mr. Sterling... please," Andrew pleaded, his voice cracking into a pathetic, desperate whine as he dropped to his knees on the marble floor—the exact spot where I had been kneeling moments ago. "It was a mistake! A marital dispute! Clara... Clara has been mentally unstable lately! She attacked Vanessa, I was just trying to discipline her—"

SMACK.

Arthur didn't use a weapon. He stepped forward and delivered an open-handed slap across Andrew’s face with such force that Andrew’s head snapped sideways, sending him sprawling onto his hip.

"You do not speak her name," Arthur growled, standing over him, his chest heaving with cold rage. "You used a leather crop on my only child. You starved her, you humiliated her, and you stole from her. You built your pathetic little company on the seed capital she quietly provided from her personal trust four years ago."

Andrew gasped, clutching his bruised cheek, staring up in horror. "What?"

"You thought you were a genius entrepreneur, Andrew?" I spoke up, my voice hoarse as two private medical specialists from my father's team gently began treating the wounds on my back, wrapping me in sterile medical sheets. "That ten-million-dollar angel investment Carter Enterprises received in its second year didn't come from a Silicon Valley venture firm. It came from Vanguard. My father funded your entire life because I asked him to give you a chance."

Andrew looked at me as if he were seeing a ghost. The reality of his entire existence cracked open like cheap glass. His wealth, his status, his arrogance—it had all been a play orchestrated by the very woman he had just whipped for two hundred strikes.

"No..." Andrew whispered, shaking his head frantically. "No, no, no... Clara, baby, please... I love you! I was confused! Vanessa seduced me! She poisoned my mind!"

"Save it for the grand jury, Mr. Carter," a new voice echoed from the shattered front entrance.

A tall, sharp-featured woman in a tailored dark coat walked into the room, flanked by six uniformed federal agents and local police officers. It was Prosecutor Evelyn Reed, the lead attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

She held up a thick sheaf of legal documents. "Andrew Carter, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, tax fraud, and aggravated felony assault."

Andrew looked at the prosecutor, then at the police, then back at my father.

"Take them," Arthur commanded quietly.

As the officers moved in, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around Andrew’s wrists, Andrew thrashed against their grip, screaming my name into the cold night air.

"Clara! Clara, please! Don't do this to me! Tell them to stop! Clara!"

I turned my back on him, resting my head against my father's shoulder as the paramedics lifted me onto a gurney. I didn't look back once.
