The Departure / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2 - Left BehindThe sound of the deadbolt locking echoed through the empty foyer like a gunshot. For a long, agonizing moment, I stared at the dark wood of the front door, expecting it to swing open. Surely, Ethan would realize what he had just done. Surely, some shred of basic human decency would force him to turn the key, to run back inside and hold my hand.

But the only sound that followed was the quiet hum of the air conditioning and the distant, fading roar of the luxury SUV pulling out of our driveway.

They were gone.

Another wave of pain, far more violent than the first, ripped through my abdomen. It felt as if my pelvis was being forced apart from the inside. I gasped, losing my footing on the slick marble floor, and collapsed onto my knees. The cold stone offered no comfort.

"My baby," I sobbed, clutching my swollen belly. "Oh God, please let my baby be okay."

My phone was sitting on the kitchen island, a million miles away across the open-plan living room. Every instinct told me to lie down, to curl into a ball and scream, but I knew that if I didn't reach that phone, I would be delivering my son entirely alone in a locked house.

I began to crawl.

It was a slow, agonizing journey. Every few inches, another contraction would seize my body, forcing me to press my forehead against the cold tile, panting through my teeth. To my left, a framed silver wedding photo of Ethan and me sat on a console table, catching the afternoon sun. We looked so happy, so picture-perfect. It felt like a cruel joke, a mocking monument to a life built on a foundation of lies.

I paid for that frame, I thought, a sudden, icy spark of anger cut through my panic. I paid for the ring on his finger. I paid for the very air he breathes.

That anger became my fuel. I dragged myself forward, my fingernails scraping against the floorboards as I reached the kitchen island. With a final, desperate heave, I reached up, my fingers brushing against the edge of the marble, and knocked the phone down. It clattered to the floor beside my face.

My hands were shaking so violently I could barely input my passcode.

I dialed 911.

"911, what is your emergency?" the operator’s calm voice filled the quiet room.

"I’m thirty-eight weeks pregnant," I gasped, tears streaming down my face. "My water broke... labor is moving too fast. My husband... he locked me in the house. I can’t open the doors. Please, you have to help me."

"Ma'am, keep breathing. I’m dispatching paramedics and a police unit to your location right now. Can you tell me your address?"

After giving her the coordinates of my locked prison, I hung up and dialed Hannah, my best friend since college. Hannah was a fierce, no-nonsense corporate attorney who had warned me about Ethan from day one. I had spent years defending him to her, trying to justify his laziness and his mother's cruelty.

When she answered, she didn't even say hello. She just heard my ragged breathing and immediately went into survival mode.

"Vanessa? What’s wrong?"

"Hannah... they left," I whispered, a fresh wave of tears blinding me. "Ethan, Linda, Ashley. They went to Miami. They locked the doors from the outside. I’m in labor."

"They what?" Hannah’s voice shook with an fury I had never heard before. "Those absolute monsters! Vanessa, stay on the line with me. I am driving to your house right now. I don't care if I have to break every window in that place, I am getting you out."

"I called 911," I whispered, my vision starting to tunnel. "They're coming."

"Good. Keep talking to me, Ness. Don't you dare close your eyes. Your boy is coming, and he needs you to be strong. We are going to get through this, and then, I promise you, we are going to burn their entire world to the ground."

As the distant wail of sirens began to echo through the quiet suburban streets, I closed my eyes, clutching my stomach. I knew my life would never be the same. But as the paramedics broke through the glass of the side door minutes later, I realized something else: the woman who had tolerated their abuse was officially dead.
