THE DECOY THESIS / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9 - A New FoundationOne year later.

The sun shone brightly over the lush green lawn of the University of Chicago campus.

I stood in front of the newly opened Center for Forensic Accounting & Financial Integrity—a state-of-the-art research facility dedicated to training young women and independent investigators to detect white-collar crime and corporate fraud.

I had used a portion of my whistleblower reward money, combined with a major university grant, to establish the center.

As the founding Director and Senior Lecturer, I wore my academic robes proudly, standing beside Dr. Marcus Vance as dozens of eager students, professors, and federal investigators gathered for the grand opening ceremony.

“Look at this, Dr. Miller,” Dr. Vance smiled warmly, looking up at the grand stone building with my name engraved on a bronze plaque beside the entrance. “You built an empire out of the very wreckage they threw at you.”

“I didn't do it alone, Marcus,” I smiled back, adjusting my glasses. “I just refused to let them write my story.”

A young female student walked up to me nervously, holding a notebook. “Dr. Miller? I read your published book, The Decoy Thesis. It completely changed how I look at financial justice. How did you stay so strong when everyone around you was trying to make you feel worthless?”

I looked at the young woman, seeing a reflection of the girl I used to be—frightened, doubted, but carrying a quiet fire inside.

I smiled gently, resting a hand on her shoulder.

“Never let anyone who is terrified of your potential convince you that you don't have a future,” I told her softly. “When they throw obstacles in your way, don't just dodge them. Use them to build your foundation.”

The student smiled brightly, nodding eagerly as she wrote my words down in her notebook.
