Chapter 10 - The Unbroken LegacyTwo years later.

On a warm, golden Saturday evening, the breeze rustled gently through the leaves of the ancient oak trees surrounding my new home in Evanston, Illinois.
It was a beautiful, light-filled brick house overlooking Lake Michigan, bought entirely with my own hard-earned money. There were no hidden cameras here, no screaming, no fear, and no toxic family secrets—only peace, warmth, and laughter.
I sat on the sunlit back porch holding a warm cup of coffee, watching the waves roll gently onto the shore.
Beside me sat David—a kind, brilliant professor of civil engineering whom I had met during a university faculty summit last year. He was a gentle, quiet man who respected my intelligence, supported my career, and cherished me for who I truly was.
“Coffee’s getting cold, Maya,” David smiled, gently sliding a warm blanket over my shoulders as the evening chill set in.
“I’m just enjoying the quiet, David,” I murmured, leaning my head softly against his shoulder.
He wrapped his arm around me, kissing the top of my head gently—right above the faint, barely visible scar on my temple where the smashed laptop had struck me three years ago.
The scar no longer represented pain or humiliation. It was my badge of honor—a permanent reminder of the night I stopped being a victim and became the master of my own destiny.
My parents were still serving their sentences in separate federal prisons, completely forgotten by the society they had tried so desperately to impress. They had tried to destroy my future to save their own past, and in doing so, they had lost everything.
I looked out at the vast, golden horizon of Lake Michigan as the sun began to set, painting the sky in brilliant shades of orange, pink, and gold.
My life was no longer a secret, a struggle, or a decoy.
