Chapter 8 - The Mistress's Ambition

As chaos consumed the executive suites of Mercer Freight, Jessica Lane sat comfortably inside her private corner office on the twenty-sixth floor, completely unaware of the financial earthquake unfolding upstairs. She leaned back in her ergonomic leather chair, casually browsing online listings for luxury penthouse apartments overlooking the French Riviera. The merger with Holloway Capital was supposed to clear today, netting Grant a massive multi-million-dollar payout, part of which he had promised to funnel directly into a joint offshore account they shared under code names. Jessica had already drafted her formal resignation letter from the corporate legal department, planning to retire to Europe before the ink on Grant’s divorce decree had even had time to dry. She smiled, visualizing the society galas in Monaco and Paris where she would play the role of a wealthy, sophisticated philanthropist, leaving her corporate past far behind. Her daydreaming was abruptly interrupted when the heavy oak door of her office flew open without warning. Jessica looked up, annoyed by the lack of professional etiquette, expecting an overly anxious junior associate. Instead, she found Grant standing in the doorway. He looked disheveled; his tie was pulled loose, his hair was messy from being repeatedly raked through by panicked fingers, and a heavy sheen of cold sweat coated his face. “Grant? What on earth are you doing here?” Jessica asked, sitting up straight. “The merger meeting with Holloway Capital starts in twenty minutes. Shouldn’t you be down in the main boardroom reviewing the final closing documents?” Grant didn't answer immediately. He walked into the office with heavy, leaden footsteps, closed the door behind him with a sharp click, and locked the deadbolt. “The merger isn't happening, Jessica,” Grant said, his voice hollow, strained, and stripped of all its usual arrogance. Jessica frowned, letting out a sharp, dismissive laugh. “Don't joke about that. We’ve spent six months positioning ourselves for this payout. My future depends on those funds clearing today.” “It’s not a joke!” Grant roared, slamming his palms flat against her desk, his eyes wide with unadulterated terror. “We’ve been wiped out. Someone bought a controlling fifty-one percent stake in the company this morning. Mercer Freight doesn't belong to us anymore. We are financially insolvent.” The color drained entirely from Jessica’s face. The luxury penthouses, the European escapes, and the multi-million-dollar future dissolved into thin air. She stood up slowly, her chair scraping against the floor. “Insolvent? Grant, what are you talking about? Fix it! Call your banking contacts! Do something!” “There is nothing left to fix!” Grant screamed, his voice cracking with rising hysteria. “Whoever engineered this takeover owns our debt, our shares, and our contracts. We don't even own the roof over our heads anymore!” Jessica stared at him with absolute, cold revulsion, realizing in a single second that the man she had hitched her wagon to was no longer a powerful titan—he was a sinking ship. Without uttering a single word of comfort, she reached down, unclipped her corporate ID badge, dropped it onto the desk, and walked straight past him toward the door. “Where are you going?” Grant whispered, staring at her in shock. “Looking for a lawyer who specializes in asset protection,” Jessica replied without looking back, pulling the door open and walking out of his life forever.
