Chapter 13 - The Betrayal of Convenience

Stripped of his executive title, his corporate keys, and his unrestricted access to company funds, Grant Mercer stumbled out of the forty-firth-floor suite and down to the ground-floor lobby. The security guards who had once saluted him respectfully now avoided his gaze entirely, whispering behind their clipboards as he staggered toward the glass exit doors. He pulled out his personal smartphone with trembling fingers, desperately needing to contact someone—anyone—who could offer a lifeline. He dialed Jessica Lane’s direct line. It went straight to voicemail. He tried her mobile number. The subscriber you have dialed is no longer accepting calls from this number. A cold wave of nausea hit him. Jessica hadn't just abandoned him in the office; she had completely severed all digital contact, blocking his number and vanishing into the labyrinth of Manhattan legal circles the exact millisecond his wealth evaporated. Desperate, Grant dialed his personal banking concierge, praying that his private offshore accounts—the ones he had secretly funded away from the divorce settlement—might offer a temporary cushion. The voice on the other end of the line was crisp, robotic, and devastatingly final. “Mr. Mercer? I am calling to inform you that pursuant to a federal asset-freezing injunction filed this morning by Holloway Capital Holdings, all private accounts, secondary trusts, and personal credit portfolios registered under your social security number have been placed under administrative quarantine pending criminal tax fraud investigations.” The phone slipped from Grant’s numb fingers, clattering loudly against the concrete pavement of the sidewalk as he stumbled blindly into the cold Manhattan autumn wind. The reality of his absolute, unmitigated destitution finally shattered his psyche. He had spent years mocking Emily for her loyalty, cheating on her with a woman who only loved his bank account, and burning bridges with every person who had ever offered him genuine support. Now, standing on the crowded sidewalk in a bespoke suit he could no longer afford, surrounded by millions of strangers who didn't even know his name, Grant Mercer was utterly, terrifyingly alone. The golden boy of Wall Street had been reduced to a beggar in his own kingdom.
