Chapter 3 - The Unwrapped Silk ScarfThe ceremony concluded without a hitch.

“I now pronounce you husband and wife,” the minister declared, as applause echoed across the opulent ballroom.

At 4:00 PM, the wedding reception began. The four hundred guests gathered around formal dining tables for the toast, sipping vintage champagne as waiters carried silver trays of caviar.

Ryan took the microphone first, giving a generic, rehearsed speech thanking everyone for attending.

“And finally,” Vanessa said into the microphone, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness, “I want to thank Ryan’s mother, Eleanor. Though age has caught up with her, and her health is clearly fading, we appreciate her willingness to hand over the Carter family heritage today.”

A soft, awkward murmur rippled through the high-society guests.

I stood up slowly from my chair.

I picked up my champagne glass, reached up with my left hand, and untied the emerald silk scarf from around my head.
