Chapter 8 - Midnight EvidenceThe night before the inspection, the base hospital was eerily quiet.

Mara and I stood in the main courtyard, looking up at the grand administrative building where the Inspector General would arrive at 8:00 AM.

"Are you ready, Mara?" I asked.

"I’ve been ready for five years," she said, her voice holding a strength that made me incredibly proud. She reached up, gently touching the collar of her white dress uniform. "I was so afraid for so long. I thought that if I spoke, I would lose the only thing I had left—my career."

"Your career is just beginning, Lieutenant," I said.

Suddenly, the security alarms in the administrative wing began to blare.

We rushed inside to find Major Crane frantically trying to exit the server room, carrying a heavy duffel bag filled with shredded files and hard drives. He had tried to execute a desperate, midnight purge of the evidence.

But Marcus and two military police officers were already waiting for him at the end of the corridor.

"Major Crane," Marcus said, his weapon drawn. "Step away from the bag and put your hands where we can see them."

Crane dropped the bag, his face pale with terror as the officers slammed him against the wall and clicked the metal handcuffs into place. He looked at Mara, his eyes filled with a pathetic, desperate plea for mercy, but she merely turned her back on him, letting the heavy doors close on his career.
