Chapter 5 - The Silent AllianceFinding a redacted file in a secure military database is like searching for a specific grain of sand in a desert during a storm. But I had an advantage: my late father had been a logistics officer, and he had taught me that no matter how thoroughly a file is deleted, a copy always exists in the backup registries of the base's regional communications depot.

I spent the next three nights in the dark server rooms of the base’s logistics center, cross-referencing encrypted communication logs from the night of the Sangin ambush.
On Friday night, my screen finally flashed green.
It was an unredacted copy of the battlefield transmission sent by the field hospital in Helmand Province, dated October fourteenth.
The text was raw, frantic, and beautiful:
MedEvac requested. Six Marine casualties. Shielded by Navy Corpsman Mara Vance, who sustained severe, full-thickness burns to 45% of her body while protecting the team from secondary blast. Officer Holt and Officer Crane remained at secure perimeter.

I stared at the screen, my heart pounding. It was the absolute, undeniable proof of their theft. The file was signed by the original medical officer, who had since retired to a quiet town in Montana.
I downloaded the file onto a secure, encrypted drive and slipped it into my uniform pocket. The trap was set. Now, we just needed to wait for the curtain to rise.
