Chapter 6 - A Mother’s Poison

Arthur Vance walked into the library, followed by two of his personal security guards. His presence was massive, filling the room with an immediate, terrifying tension.

Daniel stumbled back, his eyes wide with fear. "Arthur? What are you doing here?"

"I'm here to protect my daughter's future," Arthur said, his voice cold as stone. He looked at Patricia, then at Daniel. "You two thought you could use my little girl as a shield for your dirty money? You thought I wouldn't find out?"

"Arthur, listen to me," Patricia pleaded, her voice cracking for the first time. "It was Daniel’s idea! He’s the one who managed the accounts! We can work this out. We can give you a larger share of the development profits!"

"The development is dead, Patricia," Arthur said, stepping closer. "The feds are seizing your assets tomorrow morning. The only thing left to decide is who goes to prison first."

"I have the ledger," I called out from the desk. The progress bar on my screen reached 100%. I ejected the USB drive and held it up. "The complete transaction history, including the offshore transfers and the bribes paid to the zoning board. It's all here."

Patricia's face twisted into a mask of pure, demonic rage. She reached into the drawer of her desk, her hand emerging with a small, silver pistol.

"You ruined everything!" she screamed, pointing the weapon directly at my chest. "You barren, useless bitch! I will not let you destroy my family's legacy!"

"Mother, no!" Daniel yelled, throwing his hands up in panic.

A loud, deafening pop echoed through the library.
