Chapter 5 - The Leak in the Vault

The Sterling estate was a massive, gothic-style

mansion nestled in the exclusive hills of the city. The iron gates swung open slowly as I drove my rental car up the winding, tree-lined driveway. The house loomed ahead, its windows dark and imposing under the cloudy night sky.

Daniel opened the front door before I could even ring the bell. He looked disheveled, a stark contrast to his usual polished appearance.

"Mara," he said, stepping aside to let me in. "Thank you for coming."

The grand foyer was cold, the marble floors reflecting the dim light of the crystal chandelier. Patricia sat in a high-backed leather chair in the library, a glass of dark scotch in her hand. She looked at me with a cold, triumphant sneer.

"So, the little mouse finally realized she can't survive without her cheese," Patricia said, taking a slow sip. "Sit down, Mara. Let's get this over with."

I sat across from her, placing my leather briefcase on the mahogany table. I pulled out a stack of divorce papers, sliding them toward Daniel.

"These are the standard terms," I said. "I keep my firm, my personal savings, and a one-time settlement of two million dollars from the Sterling Group's main account. In exchange, I sign the NDA and retract my statement regarding the conspiracy to commit insurance fraud."

Daniel eagerly grabbed a pen. "I'll sign right now."

"Not so fast, Daniel," Patricia snapped, her eyes narrowing as she looked at me. "Two million is a lot of liquidity, Mara. Our accounts are tight right now because of the new developments."

"Your accounts are tight because you've been laundering money through Vance Construction," I said smoothly, leaning back.

The room went dead silent. Daniel froze, the pen hovering inches above the paper. Patricia’s hand tightened around her glass so hard the ice clinked.

"What did you say?" Patricia whispered, her voice dangerously quiet.

"You heard me," I said. "I know about the offshore accounts. I know about Vanessa's role. And I know that the federal prosecutor is already preparing an indictment. If you don't sign these papers and authorize the transfer immediately, I will upload the full transaction history to the SEC database tonight."

Patricia let out a harsh, dry laugh. "You're bluffing. You don't have the primary ledger. It’s secured behind a military-grade firewall on our private server. You can't touch it."

"You're right," I said, pointing to the laptop sitting on the desk behind Daniel—the one connected directly to the estate's local network. "I couldn't touch it from the outside. But Daniel was nice enough to let me in."

Before she could react, I stood up, walked over to the laptop, and plugged in my encrypted USB drive. A small red light on the drive began to blink rapidly.

"What is she doing?" Patricia roared, standing up. "Daniel, stop her!"

Daniel lunged toward me, but before he could reach the desk, the heavy double doors of the library burst open.
