Chapter 9 - The Trial of Daniel MercerThe trial of Daniel Mercer lasted three weeks, but for me, it felt like a lifetime of closure packed into a few days.

The prosecution presented a flawless case. The audio recording of Daniel cleaning the floor while I lay bleeding was played for the jury. The sound of his calm, cold voice dismissing my pain was so chilling that two jurors turned their heads away, unable to look at him.
Dr. Hendricks’ affidavit was read, proving the systematic financial and psychological gaslighting Daniel had orchestrated.
When Daniel took the stand in his own defense, he looked completely different from the handsome, confident man who had walked into the divorce court. He was wearing a plain, orange jumpsuit, his hair uncombed, his face hollow and pale. He tried to maintain his charm, but under the prosecutor's sharp, relentless cross-examination, he broke. He screamed, he blamed me, and he showed the world the exact monster I had lived with for ten years.
The jury took less than two hours to return a verdict of guilty on all counts.

The judge sentenced Daniel to eighteen years in a maximum-security prison, with no possibility of parole for the first twelve.
As they led him away, his mother stood in the back of the courtroom, crying silently. She looked at me, her eyes filled with a mixture of anger and regret. I didn't look back. I had spent too many years worrying about what his family thought of me. Now, their opinions were as weightless as dust.
