Chapter 5 - The Silent EvidenceDaniel stood up, his chair scraping loudly against the wooden floor. "This is a circus! I am a respected member of this community! I built our life, and I will not sit here and let my name be dragged through the mud by a crazy woman!"

"Sit down, Mr. Mercer," the judge warned, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy level.
"No, Your Honor!" Daniel yelled, his composure completely shattering. He pointed a shaking finger at me. "She’s a fraud! She’s always been a burden! Look at her—she’s sitting there pretending to be a victim, but she’s the one who ruined our marriage! She’s the one who couldn't keep herself together!"
I stood up.
The movement was slow, deliberate, and entirely silent.
Ruth stopped speaking. Daniel’s lawyer froze. The entire room seemed to hold its breath as I stepped out from behind the defense table and walked toward the center of the courtroom, standing directly in front of the judge’s bench.
My hands trembled slightly, but not from fear. It was the release of ten years of accumulated pain.
Slowly, without taking my eyes off the judge, I reached for the top button of my beige silk blouse. I unbuttoned it, then the second, and the third.
Daniel’s breath caught in his throat. "Clara, what the hell are you doing? Stop this!"
I ignored him. I pulled the collar of my blouse wide, revealing my collarbone and my chest.
The courtroom went dead silent.

Across my chest was a massive, thick, jagged red scar that stretched from the base of my throat down to my ribs. It was a brutal, ugly mark, a violent contrast to the clean, polished courtroom.
Behind me, the judge’s jaw dropped in absolute shock. The court reporter stopped typing, her mouth slightly open. In the front row of the gallery, an older woman gasped, clutching her hands to her face.
