Chapter 1 - THE MIDNIGHT CLIPPERS AND THE SILVER EAGLE

The night my mother-in-law shaved my head while I slept was the same night the Army promoted me to Colonel. I woke up bleeding, and the man I married told me to learn to obey. Pain radiated across my scalp before I understood what had happened. I reached up and felt rough, hacked patches where thick hair had been hours before, and my pillow was covered in dark brown strands. Linda stood beside the bed, holding electric clippers in her hand, her smile telling me this wasn't a mistake, but a message. When I asked what she did, she told me she fixed my priorities and demanded I resign from the Army tomorrow if I expected to remain her son's wife. Hours earlier, I had stood in the Pentagon while generals applauded my promotion after twenty-two years of deployments and missions, earning the right to command a strategic intelligence unit. Then I came home to this assault, and when Ryan appeared in the doorway, he excused his mother’s actions, claiming I had changed and was never home.
