Chapter 8 - A MARRIAGE UNDER PRESSUREThat evening, Iris placed the forged authorization on Julian's desk.

He studied it in silence.

"I never signed this."

"I know."

"Who else has seen it?"

"Evelyn Price, my attorney, and now you."

Julian set the document down.

"This is not merely an accounting scandal. If someone used my signature to authorize a fraudulent transfer, they intended to create evidence against me."

"Or to hide behind your reputation."

He looked at her.

"Do you believe I could have been involved without knowing?"

The question surprised her.

"Why would you ask me that?"

"Because every investigation eventually reaches a point where people have to decide whether they trust the person standing beside them."

Iris sat across from him.

"I trust you. But trust doesn't mean refusing to examine evidence."

A faint smile crossed his face.

"That is why I married you."

She reached for his hand.

"Julian, there's something I haven't told you."

He waited.

"When I first flagged Corrigan's debt, I wasn't certain whether the company could be saved. I believed the financial structure had weaknesses, but I didn't know about the missing charity funds."

"You didn't have to know."

"I should have looked deeper."

"You were evaluating a debt portfolio, not investigating every executive in America."

She withdrew her hand.

"Still, people are going to ask why we became involved."

"Let them ask."

"They'll say I used our marriage to gain access to confidential information."

"Then we will show them the records establishing what happened."

She looked toward the window.

"That may not be enough. Public opinion doesn't wait for evidence."

Julian moved beside her.

"Then we will not let public opinion determine what is true."

For a moment, she rested her head against his shoulder.

Their marriage had survived long periods of separation, business crises, and the loneliness that accompanied Julian's public absence. But the scandal threatened something more intimate: the possibility that people would turn their love into another weapon.

"I don't want you to destroy Miles just because he humiliated me," Iris whispered.

"I'm not doing this because he embarrassed you."

"Then why?"

"Because the debt is real. The irregularities are real. And if the evidence establishes fraud, the people responsible should answer for it."

He paused.

"But I will not let anyone use you as an excuse to turn this into a personal war."

The following morning, the first wave of accusations appeared online.

An anonymous account published the forged authorization alongside a claim that Vance Strategic Capital had secretly financed Corrigan's charitable programs before seizing control of the company.

Within hours, financial reporters were calling Julian's office.

The stock price fell.

A television commentator described the scandal as a battle between two billionaires who had used charity as a weapon.

Iris watched the broadcast with growing unease.

The report included a photograph of her from the ballroom.

The caption described her as an unidentified server who had become the center of a corporate takeover.

She turned off the television.

"They're using the humiliation to make me look like part of the scheme."

Julian's attorney entered.

"We have a more immediate problem. The board has received a complaint alleging that Vance Strategic Capital concealed its relationship with the original lenders."

"Is that true?" Iris asked.

"No," the attorney replied. "But we need the complete acquisition records to demonstrate it."

Julian stood.

"Prepare the documents."

The attorney hesitated.

"There's one more issue. The forged authorization was uploaded from a device registered to an office inside Vance Strategic Capital."

Silence filled the room.

Iris slowly turned toward her husband.

May you like

Someone inside Julian's own organization had helped construct the evidence against him.

And whoever it was had access to information that should never have left the company.
