Chapter 17 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE CURTAINNadia Mercer had spent years working in the space between corporate ambition and legal accountability.

She understood how large companies concealed liabilities, how lenders protected their investments, and how executives could be persuaded to sign documents without understanding the consequences.
She also understood the power of a convincing narrative.
A missing payment could be described as a temporary delay.
A suspicious transfer could be called an administrative advance.
A forged signature could be presented as evidence that an innocent party was involved.
The truth depended, in part, on who controlled the documents.
Nadia had used that principle to build a career.
Now she intended to use it to protect herself.
She met Daniel Cross in a private apartment overlooking the waterfront.
Daniel looked exhausted.
"You said the transfer would solve the problem," he told her.
"It solved one problem."
"The money is frozen."
"Not all of it."
"They traced the account."
"Then we move the remaining funds."
Daniel stared at her.
"You promised I wouldn't be exposed."
"I promised you would be protected if you followed instructions."
"You used my credentials to access Vance's records."
"You gave me the credentials."
"I thought we were recovering the missing money."
Nadia smiled without warmth.
"We are recovering the money."
"For whom?"
She closed the folder in front of her.
"For the people who were promised it."
Daniel looked at her in disbelief.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"No. I expect you to understand that the alternative is prison."
He sank into a chair.
"What do you want me to do?"
"Tell investigators that Julian's team accessed the authorization file before the transfer was made. Tell them the debt acquisition was coordinated with the original charitable scheme."
"But that's not what happened."
"Then prove it."
Daniel stared at her.
For the first time, he realized that Nadia had not been offering him a partnership.
She had been building a witness who could be discarded.
Meanwhile, Iris and Julian were assembling a different picture.
The new complaint against Vance Strategic Capital had triggered an internal review. Their attorneys discovered that Daniel had copied confidential files before leaving the company.
But the access logs also revealed that someone had attempted to alter the metadata after the files were copied.
The changes had been made through an external account associated with Northbridge Advisory.
Iris studied the report.
"Nadia isn't simply leaking documents. She's changing the record of who accessed them."
Julian nodded.
"She wants investigators to believe the evidence originated inside our firm."
"Can we prove the metadata was altered?"
"The forensic team believes so. But we need the original server image."
"Where is it?"
"Stored with our external security provider."
"Then let's obtain it through counsel."
Julian looked at her.
"You know what will happen if we prove Nadia falsified the records."
"She'll be investigated."
"And if the original ledger implicates people beyond Miles?"
"Then those people should be investigated too."
He smiled faintly.
"You never make this easy."
"I thought that was why you married me."
Before he could answer, their attorney entered.
"We've received a message from Daniel Cross. He wants to cooperate with the investigation."
"On what terms?" Julian asked.
"He says he has the original paper amendment witnessed by Nadia Mercer."
Iris stood.
"Where is it?"
"He won't disclose the location until he receives assurances about his legal representation."
Julian considered the request.
"Arrange for independent counsel. We won't promise him immunity."
The attorney nodded.
As he left, Iris glanced at the photograph of the disputed amendment.
If Daniel's document was authentic, it could establish whether Nadia had fabricated the waiver that concealed the original debt.
If it was false, they would need to determine who had created it.
Either way, the investigation had reached the person who might finally explain the entire scheme.
And Nadia knew it.

That night, she sent Iris a private message.
You believe you're protecting your husband. Ask him what his father knew about Charles Corrigan.
