Chapter 1 - The Ringing in the LiningThe black leather suitcase had just reached Carousel 4 when Maya Carter, seven months pregnant, reached out and grabbed the handle.

A man in a gray suit seized the other side.

“Let go,” he said quietly. “That bag was not meant to reach you.”

Maya tightened her grip. Her husband, Noah, had promised to meet her at Baltimore-Washington International after her flight from Chicago, but he was not answering. The suitcase looked like his, down to the silver scratch near the lock. More disturbing, the luggage tag carried Maya’s full name and home address.

“I never checked this bag,” she said.

Before the man could answer, an airport security supervisor pushed through the crowd. Maya recognized him immediately.

Travis Mercer, Noah’s older brother.

“There you are,” Travis said, smiling too quickly. “Noah asked me to collect you.”

Maya stepped back. Noah hated Travis. They had not spoken in almost a year.

The man in gray showed a badge too quickly for her to read. “Ma’am, do not give him the suitcase.”

Travis reached for her wrist. “This is a family matter.”

A phone began ringing inside the case. Everyone froze.

Maya pulled open the outer pocket and found a cheap burner phone. A video was already playing. Noah appeared on the screen, sitting in a dark room with blood on his collar and fear in his eyes.

“Maya, listen carefully,” he whispered. “Do not trust Travis. Do not go home. And whatever happens, protect the baby.”

The video cut out. A new message appeared: IF TRAVIS TAKES THE CASE, YOU WILL NOT LEAVE THIS AIRPORT.

Maya looked up. Travis no longer looked friendly.

The man in gray finally held his badge where she could see it. “Special Agent Lucas Reed, FBI,” he said. “Your husband stole evidence from a federal investigation.”

Then a red light began blinking beneath the suitcase lining. Lucas’s face changed. “Someone just activated the tracker,” he said. “They know exactly where you are.”
