Chapter 13 - THE MAN WHO DISAPPEARED|

Peter Voss looked older than Camille remembered.

His suit was wrinkled, his hair uncombed, and his eyes moved constantly toward the windows.

Everett's security team checked the briefcase before allowing him inside.

Camille stood across from him.

"Where have you been?"

Peter swallowed.

"Trying to stay alive."

"Who threatened you?"

He looked toward Everett.

"Your father."

Camille felt her stomach tighten.

Peter opened the briefcase and removed several folders.

"I prepared the original trust documents. Your grandmother signed them in my office, in front of two witnesses. She appointed you successor trustee. The Briarwood authorization was never approved."

"Then why did your name appear on the transfer paperwork?"

"Because I refused to sign it. Someone used my old office credentials to prepare a false copy."

"Who?"

Peter hesitated.

"Daniel Price, the chief financial officer. But he was following instructions."

"From my father?"

"Yes."

Camille sat down.

"Why didn't you go to the authorities?"

"I tried. Then someone sent me a photograph of my daughter leaving school."

Silence filled the room.

Peter looked ashamed.

"I have been receiving payments from a consulting company connected to Briarwood. At first, I thought they were legitimate fees. When I realized what was happening, I tried to withdraw. They threatened my family."

Camille studied him.

"Why come here now?"

"Because I heard what happened at the gala. I saw the video. I realized your father had gone too far."

Everett's expression remained unreadable.

"Do you have the original records?"

Peter nodded.

"Everything. Emails, bank instructions, trust documents, and the drafts Nathan asked me to prepare."

He opened another folder.

"There's one more thing."

Camille looked down.

It was a copy of an insurance policy on Beatrice's life.

The policy had been amended recently.

The beneficiary had been changed from the family trust to a company controlled by Briarwood Holdings.

Camille felt cold.

"Why would they do that?"

Peter looked at her.

"Because if your grandmother died before the trust dispute was resolved, the Briarwoods intended to claim the policy proceeds."

Everett closed the folder.

"That change will need to be investigated immediately."

Camille stood.

"Did my father know?"

Peter's silence answered.

For several seconds, she could not speak.

Then she asked, "Was the medication change connected to this?"

"I don't know," Peter said. "But I saw an email discussing the need to keep Mrs. Harrow's medical situation from delaying the transfer."

Camille looked at the man who had once advised her father through every major business decision.

"Give everything to Lydia."

"I will."

Peter lowered his voice.

"But you need to know something else. Nathan isn't the only person who benefited."

"Who else?"

Peter looked toward the door.

"Your sister."

Camille frowned.

"I don't have a sister."

Peter opened the final folder.

Inside was a birth certificate.

The name of the child listed as Nathan Harrow's daughter was not Camille.

It was Sloane Pembroke.
