Chapter 16 - THE SON WHO WASN'T SUPPOSED TO EXIST|

Daniel Ashcom had been declared dead when Julian was ten.

The official story was that he had disappeared during a sailing accident off the coast of Maine. His body was never recovered, but Richard Ashcom arranged a funeral and instructed the family never to discuss him again.

Julian had been too young to question the details. He remembered a tall man who taught him to play chess, repaired his bicycle, and slipped him chocolate whenever Catherine insisted he had eaten too many sweets.

Now the name on Michael's address made the past feel newly alive.

They arrived at a modest apartment building in Queens shortly before sunset.

The landlord recognized Daniel's name but said he had moved out six months earlier. He had left behind a small storage locker and a request that the contents be given to anyone who could identify the silver bracelet in the photograph.

Nomi held up the bracelet.

The landlord went pale.

"You're the girl he was waiting for."

He led them downstairs to the storage area.

Inside the locker were boxes of medical records, old photographs, and a stack of letters tied with blue ribbon. One envelope carried Nomi's name.

She opened it.

Dear Nomi,

If this letter reaches you, it means the people who separated us have finally lost control of the story. I remember the day they took you away. I was too young to stop them, but I promised myself that one day I would find you.

Your real name is not Nomi Dwart. It is Naomi Callaway. Michael Dwart was the name I was given after the transfer. I am your brother, but not in the way the records say.

Nomi stopped reading.

Julian leaned closer.

She continued.

We were both children in the clinic when the fire started. Your mother tried to save us. She carried you out, but someone stopped her before she could return for me. Richard Ashcom took me and gave me a new identity. He told me your family was dead and that I would be killed if I searched for you.

I believed him for years. Then I found the original medical file.

Nomi lowered the letter.

"He was there," she whispered. "Michael remembers the fire."

Julian examined the remaining documents.

One contained a photograph of a woman standing outside a hospital. Her face was partially obscured, but Julian recognized the coat.

Catherine's coat.

The same one she had worn in the old family portraits.

"She went to the clinic," he said.

Nomi looked at him.

"Your mother took Michael."

"Yes."

He felt the realization settle heavily in his chest.

Catherine had not merely signed the transfer papers. She had physically removed the boy from the school and helped erase his identity.

Julian had spent his entire life believing his mother was the one person who always told him the truth.

He now wondered how many choices she had made while calling them protection.

They found a second letter addressed to Daniel Ashcom.

It explained that Daniel had survived the sailing accident and lived under an assumed name for years. He had tried to expose Richard's involvement in the clinic fire but had been threatened into silence.

The letter ended with a warning.

If Julian learns the truth, tell him that the family did not lose a child. It stole one. And it did so because the second heir was never supposed to exist.

Julian sat down.

"What does that mean?"

Nomi looked at the next document.

It was a trust certificate showing two beneficiaries.

Naomi Callaway.

And Daniel Ashcom.

Not Michael.

Not the child listed on the hospital bracelet.

Daniel himself.

A note had been written across the bottom.

The second heir was born before the fire. The infant transferred under the Ashcom name was not Daniel.

Julian stared at the page.

"Then who was the boy?"

Nomi turned over the photograph of Margaret and Michael.

The little boy's face was partly hidden, but a small crescent mark was visible on his wrist.

She remembered the foster home, the whispered promise, and the woman who took him away.

Then she remembered the phrase he used to say whenever he was frightened.

"Don't let them move me again."

Nomi looked at Julian.

"I don't think Michael was Daniel's child."

Julian felt cold.

"Whose child was he?"

Before Nomi could answer, footsteps sounded behind them.

A woman stood in the doorway.

Catherine Ashcom.

She looked at the trust certificate, then at the photograph.

May you like

Finally, she looked at Julian.

"The boy you knew as Daniel," she whispered, "was never my son."
