Chapter 15 - THE BILLIONAIRE'S CHOICE|

Julian recognized Victor Sloane immediately.

The older man stood beside the black sedan in a dark overcoat, one hand resting on the roof. His silver hair was neatly combed, his expression almost friendly.

He had attended Julian's father's funeral and delivered a speech praising Richard's loyalty to the Ashcom name. He had also spent years moving money through private trusts and advising wealthy families on succession disputes.

"Julian," Victor called. "You've grown into your father's habits."

Julian stepped between Victor and Nomi.

"And you've grown into his lies."

Victor's smile faded.

"Careful. Accusations can be expensive."

"Then prepare your invoice."

Nomi glanced toward the school entrance. She could see two security guards approaching from the main building.

Victor noticed her.

"So the girl finally came home."

"I've never lived in your home," Nomi replied.

"No, but your name appears on the papers that control it."

"I don't care about your papers."

Victor laughed softly.

"Everyone cares about something."

Nomi looked at him.

"I care about the people you made disappear."

For the first time, Victor seemed genuinely interested.

"Who told you about the boy?"

"The school records."

Victor's expression shifted.

"Arthur should have known better."

Julian's voice was cold.

"If you threaten the headmaster, you'll answer to the police."

"Your family has been threatening people for years. Don't pretend you've discovered morality overnight."

Julian held his gaze.

"You're right. My family has done terrible things. That's why I'm not going to protect it anymore."

Victor studied him.

"You're willing to destroy the Ashcom empire for a woman you met last night?"

Julian glanced at Nomi.

"I'm willing to let it face the truth."

The older man's smile returned.

"Then you should understand that truth has consequences. The Callaway trust is tied to several properties, and any challenge could freeze the assets. Employees will lose jobs. Charities will lose funding. People who had nothing to do with the clinic will suffer because one woman wants to know who her parents were."

Nomi stepped forward.

"I didn't ask anyone to hide me. I didn't ask anyone to take my brother. I didn't ask to have my clothes torn off in front of four hundred people. Don't blame me for the consequences of the lies you chose."

Victor looked at her for a long moment.

Then he bowed his head slightly.

"Your mother spoke just like that."

Nomi's chest tightened.

"You knew Margaret?"

"I helped her when no one else would."

Julian gave a short, disbelieving laugh.

"You helped conceal her child's identity."

"I helped keep the child alive."

Victor took a small photograph from his coat pocket.

It showed Margaret standing beside a young boy.

Michael.

Nomi reached for it, but Victor pulled it back.

"Tell me where he is," she said.

"I would, but first I need you to understand something. Your brother has been living under a different name because the trust was never intended for one heir."

He turned toward Julian.

"It was created to protect two children. One from the Callaway family. One from the Ashcom family. Your father altered the documents after the clinic fire, and Richard's estate has been hiding the original beneficiaries ever since."

Julian stared at him.

"Who is the second heir?"

Victor smiled faintly.

"That is the question your mother has never answered honestly."

He placed the photograph in Nomi's hand.

Then he turned toward his car.

"Find Michael before the end of the month," he said. "If you don't, the trust will transfer automatically, and the people who altered the records will become its legal owners."

Julian stepped toward him.

"Where is he?"

Victor opened the car door.

"Ask Catherine what happened to the boy she took from the school."

The sedan pulled away.

Nomi looked down at the photograph.

Michael stood beside Margaret, smiling at something beyond the camera. His wrist bore the crescent-shaped scar she remembered from childhood.

On the reverse was an address.

This time, it was not in Philadelphia.

It was in New York.

May you like

And the name attached to it was one Nomi had seen on a guest list at the engagement party.

Daniel Ashcom.
