Chapter 6 - When Zuri Vanished from the Mansion

Emergency lights activated.
Red.
Naomi grabbed Zuri.
Damon reached for his weapon.
Victor moved toward the door.
Malcolm shouted:
“Don’t use the main hall!”
Too late.
A security alarm sounded.
Then another.
The estate descended into controlled chaos.
Adrian’s people had been inside the infrastructure for years.
Doors locked remotely.
Cameras looped.
Internal communications died.
Damon’s house had become a trap.
“Safe room,” Victor said.
“No.”
Damon looked at Naomi.
“Service passage.”
“What passage?”
“Behind the east pantry.”
Mrs. Whitfield knew it.
So did Damon.
Built generations ago for servants.
Irony.
The billionaire survived his own compromised mansion through the corridors designed for people his ancestors barely noticed.
They moved.
Damon.
Naomi.
Zuri.
Victor.
Catherine.
Malcolm.
At the pantry, gunfire sounded somewhere distant.
Zuri started crying.
Naomi covered her ears.
“It’s okay.”
Damon opened the hidden panel.
“Inside.”
They entered a narrow corridor.
Dark.
Dusty.
Zuri whispered:
“Secret house.”
“Apparently.”
They reached the old laundry stairwell.
Then Naomi stopped.
“Zuri?”
Everyone turned.
Her arms were empty.
No.
Impossible.
Naomi screamed.
“Zuri!”
Damon’s blood stopped.
The toddler had been behind them.
Holding Naomi’s hand.
When?
Where?
They ran backward.
No child.
One side door stood open.
A small service elevator.
Damon slammed the call button.
Nothing.
Naomi looked like she might collapse.
“You said—”
“I know.”
“Find her.”
“I will.”
“No.”
She grabbed his jacket.
“Don't tell me you will. Find her.”
Damon nodded.
No promise.
Action.
They split carefully.
Victor with Naomi.
Damon with Catherine.
Malcolm under guard.
Security rebooted partially.
One camera showed a small figure in pink walking through the west hall.
Zuri.
Alone.
Then a man appeared.
He crouched.
She did not run.
That terrified Damon.
The man lifted her.
Face turned toward camera.
Adrian Ashford.
Damon’s uncle.
Naomi’s biological father.
Zuri’s grandfather.
He carried the child like he had a right.
Damon stared at the screen.
“Where?”
Camera feed switched.
Garage.
Adrian placed Zuri into a car.
Black sedan.
Gate opened.
Damon ran.
Too late.
The car disappeared beyond the drive.
Naomi arrived seconds later.
Saw the replay.
She made no sound at first.
Then:
“He took her.”
Damon turned to Malcolm.
“Where would he go?”
“I don’t know.”
Victor pressed a pistol against Malcolm’s chest.
“Wrong answer.”
Damon pushed it away.
“No.”
Victor stared.
“He helped them.”
“Yes.”
“He knows.”
“Then threatening him wastes time.”
Damon looked at Malcolm.
“Think.”
Malcolm’s breathing shook.
“Adrian has safe properties.”
“List.”
“Charleston. Wilmington. A farm near Hickory. Old Ashford lodge.”
Damon froze.
“The lodge.”
Elena loved that place.
Adrian hated it publicly.
Which made it useful privately.
They went.
Police.
Federal agents.
Damon.
Naomi insisted.
No one argued.
At the mountain lodge, no guards visible.
Front door open.
Naomi ran.
Damon stopped her.
“Wait.”
“My daughter.”
“I know.”
“You don't.”
He looked at her.
“I know enough.”
They entered together.
Music.
Soft.
The same melody from Elena’s music box.
Naomi’s face changed.
They followed it upstairs.
Zuri sat on a bed.
Safe.
Eating crackers.
Adrian sat beside the window.
He looked old.
Calm.
“Mommy!”
Zuri ran.
Naomi caught her.
She fell to the floor hugging the child.
Damon’s anger became almost unbearable.
Adrian watched.
“You see?”
“What?”
“I never hurt her.”
“You kidnapped her.”
“She is my granddaughter.”
“She is Naomi’s daughter.”
Adrian looked at Naomi.
“My daughter.”
Naomi stood slowly.
“No.”
“Biologically—”
“No.”
That one word had more force than a speech.
“You don't become my father because paperwork says you are.”
Adrian’s face tightened.
“I protected you.”
“You watched me.”
“I gave Isaiah a job.”
“You sent him to spy on me.”
“He fell in love.”
“And you killed him.”
Adrian looked away.
There.
Not denial.
Naomi’s voice broke.
“You killed him.”
“I ordered Malcolm to retrieve the files.”
“That is not an answer.”
“Things escalated.”
Damon almost laughed.
Every powerful coward used passive language when blood appeared.
Adrian turned to Damon.
“You understand.”
“No.”
“You've ordered men handled.”
“Yes.”
“And sometimes things happened.”
“Yes.”
“Then don't judge me.”
Damon stared.
“I judge myself too.”
Adrian looked genuinely surprised.
That difference mattered.
Damon continued.
“I spent years pretending outcomes weren't mine because I didn't swing the fist personally.”
He looked toward Zuri.
“No more.”
Adrian laughed.
“You've become sentimental because a maid and a child wandered into your grief.”
“Maybe.”
“You'll lose the company.”
“Maybe.”
“Everything your father built.”
Damon thought of Elena.
Isaiah.
Naomi.
Zuri.
“Then maybe he built the wrong thing.”
Adrian stood.
Gun appeared in his hand.
Naomi pulled Zuri behind her.
Federal agents moved outside.
Damon remained still.
“Don't.”
Adrian looked at the child.
His granddaughter.
Then at Naomi.
“My blood.”
Naomi shook her head.
“We are not property.”
Adrian’s hand trembled.
For the first time, he seemed to understand he had lost something control could not recover.
Then a shot sounded outside.
Adrian flinched.
Victor burst through the rear door.
Gun raised.
“Drop it!”
Adrian fired.
Damon moved.
He tackled Naomi and Zuri behind the bed.
Victor returned fire.
Adrian fell.
Alive.
Shoulder wound.
Federal agents entered.
Everything ended in less than ten seconds.
Zuri cried against Naomi.
Damon crouched near them.
She reached out.
“Boss.”
He almost broke.
“I’m here.”
“Bad grandpa?”
Naomi closed her eyes.
Damon chose his words carefully.
“He made very bad choices.”
Zuri looked at Naomi.
“Mama grandpa?”
Naomi kissed her forehead.
“Not every family is good for us just because they’re family.”
Damon looked at Victor.
May you like
Victor looked back.
That lesson belonged to both of them.
