Chapter 5 - The Brother Who Wanted the Ashford Empire

Adrian’s plan depended on blood.
Old money often did.
The Ashford family trust was written decades earlier by men who believed bloodlines were more important than competence.
If Damon died without children and Victor became legally unavailable, authority moved temporarily to Margaret.
But if Margaret declined or died, Adrian’s branch gained rights.
Adrian had no publicly acknowledged children.
Except Naomi.
A daughter hidden twenty-nine years.
And Zuri.
A granddaughter.
Damon stared at the trust documents.
“He could use Naomi as a proxy heir.”
Catherine nodded.
“Especially if he controlled her legally or financially.”
Naomi laughed bitterly.
“Controlled me?”
“You were hired into this house through an agency Malcolm owns.”
Naomi stopped.
“What?”
Damon checked.
True.
Indirectly.
The staffing agency belonged to a holding company controlled by Malcolm.
Naomi had believed she infiltrated Damon’s estate.
Adrian had placed her there.
The realization hurt her pride.
Worse, it frightened her.
“He wanted Zuri inside too.”
“Why?”
Catherine looked at the child.
“Because proof of lineage matters.”
Damon’s jaw tightened.
“No.”
Naomi looked at him.
“What?”
“He doesn't get near her.”
“You don't decide—”
“I know.”
Damon stopped himself.
That mattered.
He corrected:
“What do you want?”
Naomi looked surprised.
Then understood.
“I want her safe.”
“Good.”
“And I want answers.”
“Also good.”
“No cages.”
He nodded.
“No cages.”
Victor returned to the estate two days later with his arm in a sling.
Zuri stared at him.
“You Damon?”
Victor laughed.
“Better-looking version.”
Damon said:
“Leave.”
Zuri pointed between them.
“Same face.”
“Tragic,” Damon said.
Victor became serious when Catherine showed him the trust clause.
“Adrian’s preparing succession.”
“Yes.”
“Then he needs Margaret.”
Damon looked toward his mother’s wing.
“What for?”
“To decline control.”
“Why would she?”
Victor stared.
“Because he has leverage.”
They asked Margaret.
She refused initially.
Then broke.
Adrian had evidence connecting her to the transfers Elena discovered.
If exposed, she could face criminal charges.
“He told me if Damon died, I would sign everything to his branch.”
Damon felt no surprise anymore.
“Would you?”
Margaret cried.
“I don't know.”
“That isn't comforting.”
“I was afraid.”
Victor laughed bitterly.
“Everyone in this family commits crimes because they’re afraid.”
Damon looked at him.
“You’re included.”
“I know.”
Then security announced Malcolm Vane had arrived voluntarily.
That was unexpected.
Malcolm entered the study with no attorney.
No bodyguard.
He looked exhausted.
Damon stayed standing.
“Why are you here?”
“Because Adrian is going to kill me.”
Victor laughed.
“Good opening.”
Malcolm ignored him.
“I have evidence.”
“Of?”
“Everything.”
“You expect immunity?”
“I expect survival.”
Damon looked at Naomi.
She was holding Zuri near the window.
Malcolm saw the child.
His expression changed.
Guilt.
That interested Damon.
“You know her.”
“Only from photographs.”
Naomi stepped forward.
“You came to my apartment.”
“No.”
She froze.
“Someone did.”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Malcolm swallowed.
“Adrian.”
Naomi’s face emptied.
Her biological father had personally entered her life under another identity.
“Did he hurt Isaiah?”
“No.”
“Did he order it?”
Malcolm looked toward Damon.
“Yes.”
There.
Direct.
“Proof?”
“Recorded call.”
Malcolm handed over a flash drive.
Damon did not touch it.
Victor did.
They played the audio.
Adrian’s voice.
Clear.
“Carter has copied the wrong things. Fix it before Damon sees.”
Malcolm answered:
“And Elena?”
Adrian:
“If she stays with him, she becomes his weakness. If she turns against him, she becomes ours. Either way, contain her.”
No explicit murder command.
Then another recording.
After Elena’s death.
Malcolm:
“The car went too far.”
Adrian:
“You were told to frighten her.”
Damon stopped breathing.
Malcolm had altered her car.
Adrian claimed it wasn't meant to kill.
Same cowardly pattern.
Intent mattered legally.
Not emotionally.
Damon crossed the room.
Victor grabbed his arm.
“Don't.”
Malcolm backed away.
“I didn't mean—”
Damon hit him.
Once.
Hard.
Then stopped.
Zuri was watching.
Naomi was watching.
Damon’s fists remained clenched.
But he stepped back.
Malcolm touched his lip.
“I deserve worse.”
“Yes.”
Damon’s voice shook with restraint.
“But you don't get it from me.”
Victor looked at his brother.
Something changed in his face.
Respect, maybe.
Malcolm began talking.
Adrian built the network twenty-two years earlier.
At first, simple fraud.
Then property schemes.
Political bribery.
Manipulated acquisitions.
Malcolm became indispensable.
Elena noticed the housing accounts because she volunteered through the foundation.
Isaiah found the system.
Victor suspected it.
Damon had been kept busy running the legitimate empire.
“Why not kill me sooner?”
Damon asked.
Malcolm answered:
“Your profits protected everyone.”
Damon almost laughed.
Of course.
They needed him competent.
Alive.
Blind.
When he began reforming the businesses after Elena died, he became a threat.
“So now Adrian replaces me with Naomi.”
“Yes.”
Naomi stared.
“I would never agree.”
“He planned to force you.”
“How?”
“Custody.”
She went white.
“Of Zuri?”
Malcolm nodded.
“He collected information portraying you as unstable. Poor. Obsessive. Involved in corporate espionage.”
Naomi laughed in horror.
“He wanted to take my daughter.”
“Temporarily.”
Damon’s voice became ice.
“There is no temporarily when someone takes a child from her mother.”
Malcolm looked away.
Then Zuri climbed down.
She walked toward him.
Naomi tried to stop her.
Damon raised a hand.
Not because he trusted Malcolm.
Because Zuri was looking at something.
She pointed at his jacket.
“Lion.”
Malcolm froze.
A gold lion pin.
Same shape as Elena’s figurine.
Damon stared.
“Where did you get that?”
Malcolm touched it.
“Adrian gave these to senior executives years ago.”
Damon remembered.
His father’s private circle.
Then Zuri said:
“Daddy had one.”
Naomi turned.
“What?”
Zuri nodded.
“Daddy lion.”
Isaiah Carter had possessed an Ashford inner-circle pin.
That meant he wasn't only a junior systems analyst.
Malcolm whispered:
“Isaiah was working directly for Adrian before he turned.”
Naomi stared.
Her husband had hidden another life.
Damon understood.
Isaiah knew Adrian because he had been recruited.
Maybe groomed.
Then he discovered what the organization really was.
“Why recruit Isaiah?”
Malcolm looked at Naomi.
“Because Adrian knew who Naomi was.”
Silence.
“Isaiah was supposed to watch her.”
Naomi’s face broke.
“No.”
“Initially.”
“No.”
“He fell in love with you.”
Naomi slapped Malcolm.
Hard.
Zuri gasped.
Naomi immediately stepped back.
“I’m sorry, baby.”
But the damage was done.
Not to Malcolm.
To memory.
Isaiah had not met Naomi randomly.
He had been sent.
Yet he had eventually risked his life for her.
Love and betrayal existed in the same story.
Again.
Damon looked at Naomi.
“You okay?”
“No.”
“Good answer.”
She almost laughed despite tears.
Then Adrian Ashford called.
Directly to Damon’s private line.
“Interesting gathering.”
Damon looked toward the ceiling.
Cameras.
“How are you watching?”
Adrian laughed.
“You still don't understand your own house.”
Damon’s stomach tightened.
Then Adrian said:
May you like
“Naomi, sweetheart, I think it’s time you finally met your father.”
The lights went out.
