Chapter 3 - The First Wife's Warning“Six years ago, they did the exact same thing to me in Nevada,” Rebecca revealed, pulling up bank statements on her tablet. “Nathan swept me off my feet, Diane pretended to be the loving mother-in-law, and within three months of our wedding, they emptied my family’s trust fund and disappeared overnight.”

“How did they get away with it?” I whispered, tears of rage and shock filling my eyes.

“Because Nathan uses stolen identities of deceased men,” Pike explained. “When the victim realizes they’ve been defrauded, 'Evan Mercer' vanishes into thin air, leaving behind an untraceable paper trail.”

“Where are they now?” I asked, my voice steadying through sheer, unshakeable grit.

“They are waiting for you at the hotel suite, expecting you to drive with them to the secluded coastal estate in Shell Beach,” Pike said. “And that is exactly where we are going to catch them.”

Investigator Pike pulled out an encrypted wiretap device, small enough to fit inside the lining of my purse.

“You’re going to go back to that hotel room, Clara,” Pike instructed. “Act completely normal. Tell them you’re ready for the beach house. We will be right behind you.”
