Chapter 1 - The Call from the County ClerkWe were packing for the beach when the marriage office called with a chilling warning: âCome aloneâand donât tell your husband or mother-in-law.â

The county clerkâs voice dropped to a whisper before I could even ask what was wrong.
âMrs. Bennett, do not tell your husband or his mother that we called. Come to the county records office immediately. Bring your identification and come alone.â
I stood frozen beside the open suitcase while my new husband, Evan Mercer, zipped his beach bag across the room.
âWho was that?â he asked.
âMy aunt,â I lied, my heart hammering against my ribs. âShe forgot something at the hotel.â
Evan smiled, but his eyes stayed fixed on my phone. His mother, Diane, appeared in the doorway wearing sunglasses and holding our car keys.
âWe need to leave now,â she said smoothly. âThe beach house is three hours away.â
I told them I needed fifteen minutes to pick up a prescription at the pharmacy down the street. Diane offered to come with me. When I refused, her smile vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, searching stare.
I drove straight to the county courthouse, checking my rearview mirror the entire way to make sure no one was tailing my car.
Inside, records supervisor Lisa Grant locked the conference-room door behind me. A county fraud investigator named Aaron Pike placed two marriage applications side-by-side on the table.
The first was mine, signed the night before after our seaside ceremony.
The second had been filed six years earlier in Nevada.
Same groom photograph. Same date of birth. Different name.
âYour husbandâs Social Security number belongs to Nathan Mercer,â Pike said. âBut the birth certificate he submitted belongs to Evan Mercer, a man who died nine years ago.â
My mouth went completely dry.
Lisa slid another page toward me. It was an active marriage license between Nathan Mercer and a woman named Rebecca Lawson. No divorce had ever been recorded.
Before I could speak, someone knocked three times on the heavy oak door.

Pike opened the door. A pale woman in a gray suit stepped inside, clutching a photograph of my husband.
She looked directly at me and said, âMy name is Rebecca Mercer. The man you married last night is still legally married to me.â
